Carl offered to assist the younger guy to his feet, but he ignored him and got to his feet on his own.

I don't need your assistance!" Doris wobbled briefly, but eventually regained his balance. "You're going to pay for what you did to Ellen!"

“Ellen?” Carl's pulse quickened. What's wrong with her?" And what exactly happened? Can she feel pain?

"You are aware of your actions!" His voice echoed around the house as Doris yelled at him. To paraphrase, "You got her pregnant and shipped her back to Sun rock!"

Carl experienced a pit in his stomach. A humming in his mind filled his ears and drowned out all other noise. He ignored whatever Doris was babbling about. She's carrying his kid, and her name is Ellen.

Finally, she broke down in tears. I'm shedding tears for you, you jackass! I overheard her chatting to Kelly Betsy when she thought I wasn't home.

To which Doris Carl shook his head and said, "Carl. Incredulous: "I had no idea!" Truly, I do! She suddenly disappeared.
