Daehuyn left the room with his own laminated copy of the agreement he had just made with the chairman. He stuffed it back into the brown envelope and sighed, making his way to the foot of the stairs that would lead to the main rooms upstairs, the first room he had entered when he first came here. Not a memory he'd like to relive.
Before he could move forward, the paper was tugged out from under his arm, and before he could do anything about it, Soyoung was already a distance away from him, reading through the outlined document the chairman had given him.
Her face changed as she continued to read the document while Daehuyn folded his arms, leaning against the staircase handrail. Soyoung walked back to him, unable to coordinate her words. What did this deal mean and for the chairman to go as far as putting his seal on it?
"He wants me to kind of train his daughter into a positive leadership role, as you've read there, and I didn't tell you about it because, frankly, I was expecting you to scream, not shut down." Daehuyn briefly explained.
"Does Yeonseul know about this?" Soyoung managed to breathe out, and when Daehuyn didn't answer, she raised her voice and screamed again.
"No, I haven't. Wasn't it you guys' bright idea to give me a midnight test? I wanted to tell you before making a decision."
"I know the chairman's a good man, but listen to me Daehyun, all businessmen find loopholes in contracts like this and this seal... This seal means there's no escape if something goes wrong," Soyoung said shakily. Daehyun noticed and rushed to her side before she collapsed.
"Yeonseul... Yes, Yeonseul would know what to do about it." Soyoung stood up. Daehyun just couldn't understand why or what she was so scared about. He was just going to make the chairman's daughter a better person. It shouldn't be a matter of life and death, right?
"Well, there's nothing we can do about this now," Yeonseul said after reading the chairman's agreement with Daehyun.
"What do you mean there's nothing? You're always with the chairman. How come you didn't know anything about this? He's still a rookie, he couldn't have known anything."
"Then it's time he knew, it's time he knew just what the Moon family is!" Yeonseul snapped at Soyoung.
"Look kid, the truth is, there's actually nothing to be afraid of, as long as you don't mess up and as long as you don't fall in love with the chairman's daughter," Yeonseul spoke to Daehyun.
"I don't plan to mess up, and there's no way in a million years would I fall for someone like Moon Hana," Daehyun defended.
"Well kid, you're not the first to make such bold claims," Yeonseul said, sitting back down on his bed.
"What does that mean?"
"The chairman's copy? What were the rules agreed on?" Yeonseul asked as Soyoung paced the room.
"Err, on no count would I forget my place as a teacher and not protect his daughter. Weekly reports must be made to him. Failure of change would have consequences and..."
"On no account would you have any other relationship other than a teacher-student relationship with his daughter." Yeonseul finished the last clause. Daehyun stared at Yeonseul. There had to be something he didn't know about.
"About four years ago, just a few years after Taehyun left the house, Hana began to act out. Her father was always busy, her mother spent more time at spas than with her daughter, and the only person she could talk to had just left her behind. The good little girl we once knew was now on a mission to cause havoc at every opportunity she got," Yeonseul explained, Soyoung threw her hands in the air, not wanting to face any of them.
"Prep schools, private tutors, behavior classes, nothing worked. Then two years ago, after the young woman turned 20, the chairman hired a therapist. He was young, jovial, and good at his job because we began seeing changes. Why?"
"Because Hana fell in love with the young man and that was it," Soyoung said, with a bitter memory of the past lingering in her mind.
"Soyoung was in charge of Hana then, so she believed she was also responsible for what happened to him after the chairman found out about them." Daehyun looked at Soyoung. He had finally realized why she went all out when he fell sick.
"What happened to him?"
"That's the scary part. It's been two years since then and we still don't know where or how he is. So, what we're trying to say is, if the Chairman doesn't think you're good enough for his daughter, then there's a chance he's going to want you out of the picture, forcefully." As Yeonseul explained, Daehyun was worried. He hadn't thought that far, but in order not to be taken out of the picture, Daehuyn had to make sure that the hatred the young woman had for him continued for as long as he was going to work with her.
"Does that mean the young lady has never had a relationship?" Daehyun asked curiously, gathering information.
"She was once, but the bad blood of both their families got in the way, and then they had to break up," Yeonseul answered.
"I'm glad she left that one. Something just didn't sit right with him." Daehuyn wanted to push, wanting to know more, but that would be fine for new. Soyoung said, still staring at a distance.
You'll be escorting the young lady to school from now on. You might run into him, so keep an eye out. His name is Kang Dae. He's the son of the Chairman's rival, Kang Jin Seok." Daehuyn dished out the information he was patiently waiting for.
"Kang Dae." He'd try to remember the name, Daehuyn repeated under his breath.
"Noona," Daehuyn called Soyoung. Her body stiffened after hearing the familiar word come out of the unfamiliar mouth. Daehuyn smiled at her reaction and continued.
"I need you to tell me everything I need to know about the young lady, past, present, likes, dislikes, leave nothing out. If I'm going to do this, I might as well do it well."
Soyoung looked at Yeonseul, who nodded in approval before she looked back at Daehuyn and slowly nodded, "I won't let anything happen to you again, not on my watch."
Soyoung laid down everything she knew about the young lady, including the rumors that might or might not be true, but they needed everything to be sure.
For now, it was only a matter of time before the young woman would find out about the deal between her father and Daehuyn. He planned to go see her and give her the interesting news, but Daehuyn eventually got caught up in the extra information from Yeonseul and Soyoung. The next day was Saturday. Daehuyn would have to start from somewhere, eventually.
At 4:30 a.m.
He got up early the next morning, did his usual morning mantras, exercised, and brushed his teeth, but didn't change out of his workout clothes. Instead, he walked straight to the main house by 5:30 am, when the other guards were just waking up.
He went straight to Hana's room and knocked. He knocked a few times but there was no response, so he muttered an excuse and entered into the dark but still pink room. The curtains were heavy enough not to let the sunlight in. The air conditioner was on, making the room cold and calm, while the young woman was drabbed under heavy blankets. She also wore a sleeping mask to prevent light from entering into her eyes.
"Korea is already so cold, what does she need an air conditioner for?" He asked quietly as he shook his head.
Daehuyn put on the lights and then walked over to her bed. Frankly, he preferred her now that she was asleep. He sighed before pulling off her very heavy duvet covers. Hana didn't wake up but curled herself into a ball as her hands searched for her blanket covers.
"Oppa... I'm cold. Please come stay with me," Hana mumbled in her sleep and while looking for her covers, she found a hand. She snuggled into the hand before she realized she had a room all to herself. No one was supposed to be in here.
Hana jumped up, pulling her night mask into her already messy hair, and as soon as she set her eyes on Daehuyn, he smiled and she screamed out loud.
"What the hell are you doing here?" Hana screamed after that. Even though he was on the other side of the bed, Daehuyn took a step closer. Hana, too, took a step back.
"You can scream all you want, but I'm in charge of you now, Moon Hana. Daddy's orders," Daehuyn said with a devilish smile.
And so began the ill-fated relationship between Kim Daehuyn and Moon Hana.
