Chapter Ten

Chapter 10: Selena

David's POV

Why do we always meet in a disadvantageous state Selena? Why?

The sunlight came through the window of the car and it made her wrinkle her eyebrows, tossing and turning on my laps.

"This should be a good sign. She's not totally unconscious." I thought

Her golden brown hair glowed under the sun and I have to admit, her looks were a bit above average.  I used my hand to block the sun and I couldn't help but to continue checking her out. Her lips were small and bright pink. Her skin… Peachy?  Well, it complimented everything about her quite well. She didn't wear any make up but her cheeks were bright red.

That shouldn't be normal for a semiconscious person right?

I placed my palm on her forehead and immediately increased the air conditioner. ' She's burning' would be an understatement. I caressed her hair and stroking a particular part, a warm liquid stuck to my palm.

Blood.

"Norman, no need to go far anymore. The next hospital you see pull over. She's bleeding." I ordered.

****

St. Williams Hospital,

Arriving at the hospital, I quickly carried her out and rushed in. The nurses came running towards me with a stretcher and I placed her carefully on it.

"She's bleeding and seems to be having fever." I said

Another nurse walked up holding a file "Please come with me and fill in the patient's details." Details? I don't know anything about her except her name, well, she's a waitress. That shouldn't be needed. I left the nurse and followed the nurses pushing Selena instead.

"Sir!" I heard the nurse shout after me. I ignored her completely and focused on how Selena was transferred to a bed. A doctor came up to give her a check up and closed the curtains. Nurses kept on rushing in and out with various instruments. I placed both hands in my pocket and frowned. Norman arrived at my side after what felt like hours.

"I have explained to the nurses sir. " He reported and I nodded.

"One of you should please come with me." The doctor said, pushing the curtain open and walked away with a bunch of nurses flapping behind him.

"See to it." I ordered. When he was out of view, I looked at Selena laying almost lifeless on the bed. If not for the monitors, I would think she's dead. I guess she's completely unconscious now. Her face did gain some color but was pale compared to how she was when she fought with me about my grandma. I couldn't help but chuckle remembering that scene.

I took her hand, her body temperature was much more higher than earlier and I couldn't help but panic. I quickly tapped consistently on the button calling for a nurse. In less than a minute a nurse was by her side. She measured her temperature then left the room after a while she was back with a couple of injection and injected some liquid into her intravenous drip bag.

"She'd be okay sir. Especially with you by her side" The nurse smiled at me before walking away.

Norman walked in with the doctor at that moment.

"Mr. Alokwe, she'll be okay. She already had signs of fever but she ignored it . She'd wake up later today, the bleeding wasn't much thankfully. Her left arm is fractured but, it should be okay in two to three weeks, a month at most. She also has to come for a check up regularly within this few days." The doctor smiled at me and I nodded in response.

I looked around at other patients. I hate seeing sick people.

"I want a private ward for her." I  said.

"That's not a problem. Just paperwork." He smiled.

"You are?" I asked, I finally noticed that this is a different doctor that gave her a check up earlier.

"Dr. Wills, I'm the hospital's director."

I nodded in response. Norman must have told them who I am.

"Take care of all the formalities and find a way to contact her family." I turned to Norman.

"Yes sir"

I looked back at her and thought she'll be hungry once she wakes up.

Why am I worrying this much about her? It must be my guilty conscience? Yes.

Me: I am going to look for food

Norman: Sir, I can handle that after these.

Me: Don't worry. Cancel all my plans for the day.

Norman: Sir, is something wrong?

Me: Do as you are told.

I exited the hospital. I walked really fast to the car park and when I got close to the care I realized I wasn't with the car keys. I looked back at the hospital then at the road. I walked towards the road and it dawned to me, that I'm really planning to get food for a woman that almost snatched my grandma away from me. Yelled at me. Gave me a three out of ten. But, still some how can't get out of my head.

What's gotten into me?

No. I owe her this much. She atleast saved my grandma and I accidentally hit. Guilty conscience. That's all there is.

I hailed a taxi

"De Julie's restaurant" I instructed the driver as I settled down in the taxi.

"Okay sir." He replied and merged with the traffic.

After a really long time of annoying commercials on the radio and the endless traffic lights. We finally got to the restaurant.

"That'll be thirty five dollars." The driver said.  I touched the pocket of my jacket and realized, I didn't carry my wallet from the company.

"Code." I said as I stepped out of the taxi.

"I don't use code sir."

I sighed and dialed Jack's number.

"Dave? What's up?" I looked back. He waved his phone at me and I quickly hung up.

"Pay" I  said pointing at the taxi.

"You came here in this? Were you robbed?" Jack stared at me as if her had seen a ghost.

"Which one of you is paying. I don't have all day" The driver said hitting his car roof.

"Sorry sir. How much is it ?" Jack quickly smiled at the driver

"Thirty five " He said.

"Do you happen have change for a hundred?" Jack asked. I was shocked he had that on him. He must be coming back from a blind date then.

"I only have fifty and twenty dollars with me." The driver said.

"Give me the fifty you can keep the rest." Jack paid the driver and took the fifty dollars from him.

I immediately turned around and walked in.

"Hey! Wait up. Why did you take a taxi?Where's Norman?"

"At the hospital" I said

"What happened to him?" Jack asked

"Nothing." I said

"Why is he there then?" He asked. We stepped into the elevator and I turned to him and sighed.

"An accident. We hit a girl on the road today." I said

"Holy fuck! Have the girl's family come?" He asked

"No. Norman is still trying to get in touch with them."

"Don't you have a meeting with the board today?" He asked

"It had to be cancelled ofcourse." I said

"Again!" He exclaimed

"It is not my fault this time" I said and we arrived at his office. I walked to the couch and dropped dead there.  My mind wondered to Selena. Could she be awake by now?

"What are you thinking of?"

"Pack up a nice lunch for me. Just put anything girls would like to eat when they are sick." I said.

"For the girl you hit?" He asked.

"Who else would I pack lunch for now Jack?" I asked

"Just a yes or a no question." He said and walked up to his desk and picked up the landline " A deluxe lunch… Send it to my office." He said to the phone.

"No, once it's ready. I'll pick it up downstairs. Also, make it fast." I said.

"Tell me once it's done. Make it fast" He said and dropped the phone.

"So…. You are doing this because?" He asked

"What do you mean?" I asked

"You took a taxi to my place just to get lunch for a girl. I do delivery services you know. Come on man. Why did you really come here" He said and passed me a bottle water. I looked at his face and he was smiling.

"I can't stop thinking of her" I blurted out and clenched my fists.

"I thought you'll end up getting married to your company. But, David Alokwe has actually fallen in love." He announced and laughed.

***

I got back to the hospital two hours later. Jack really has his ways of making you stay at his place for a long time without you realizing. I don't even remember how we ended up opening a bottle of wine in the afternoon. I was a little bit tipsy. His driver opened the car door and I hurried out to the hospital. I told Norman to only call me if she had waken up and  he hasn't.

I was starting to get worried. I walked as fast as I could to her ward trying hard to avoid running so the food wouldn't pour. I got to the ward but she wasn't there. I became alarmed.

Where is she?

"Sir?" I turned back and saw Norman. He quickly came to me to take the lunch box but I didn't allow him.

" Where is golden hair?"  I asked.

"The girl. Her name is Selena Jones. She's already at the private ward sir." He said.

"I know. Lead the way" I instructed and I followed Norman to the elevators. When he pointed at the door, I rushed there and busted the door open.

She was already awake.

She turned to look at me for a while. Her eyes were hazel green. A large contrast to the color of the hospital. I noticed her orbs travel from my head to my leg. Is she checking me out again? Would I get more than a three this time?

Gosh! What am I even thinking? Why am I this curious? It's not possible.

How can I fall in love with a girl I just met?

Jack says rubbish all the time. I can't really have fallen in love with her. Maybe I'm a bit hooked up because she was different.

"So do I get a pass mark?" I blurted out. My mouth went against my mind.
