CHAPTER 27: THIS PLACE IS CRAZY

Jeanette was busy with her usual work routine. Something was different about today. She woke up feeling like she was…special. She had even called her parents to check up on them; something she did rather occasionally.

'Sorry.' She gasped after bumping into Shanice, the head nurse.

'Oh it's fine, at least you didn't spill my coffee,' Shanice laughed, keeping the plastic cup of hot cappuccino on a nearby desk.

'Thank God.' Jeanette smiled. Today was going great so far, she wouldn't want spilled coffee to ruin it.

'So, how'd your date with the rich hottie go?' Shanice winked.

'Rich hottie?' Jeanette furrowed her eyebrows as she asked.

'Yeah. Zac, the guy I hooked you up with. You said you had a date with him yesterday,'

'Oh… Zac.' Jeanette rubbed her neck. She didn't even remember that his name was Zac. As a matter of fact, her date with Damien went so well that she forgot she had even met Zac.

'It went great!' Jeanette smiled.

'That's good! He seems fast, I'm guessing you got some "action" huh?' Shanice hit her elbow gently on Jeanette's hip.

'So when's the next date?' Shanice took her coffee from the desk.

'There isn't going to be one,' Jeanette rubbed her neck again.

'What? Why?'

'He's just not my type.' Jeanette replied.

'So you have a type?' Shanice laughed lightly. Jeanette found her tone offensive but decided to ignore it.

'Yes, I do.' Jeanette faked a smile.

'Pardon me, I just don't see a ring on your finger or a man coming to pick you up.' Shanice said before taking a sip of the drink in her hands. Jeanette was taken aback by her words. That wasn't any of Shanice's business. She immediately regretted agreeing to Shanice's idea of meeting that obnoxious man. She must have looked so desperate to this woman.

'Well you'll be seeing him soon.' Jeanette smiled before walking away.

'I'm not even sure I'll see Damien again.' Jeanette thought in distress as she walked in a fast pace.

'Sure!' Shanice exclaimed watching Jeanette's back.

'What a way to start my day. This place is crazy!' Jeanette rolled her eyes as she walked pass ward 18. She paused and then walked backwards.

'The patient has visitors? Who are they?' She thought in surprise as she peeped through the space made by the barely shut door.

'Mike?' She whispered as soon as her eyes landed on him and the two other kids.

'Hello Valerie. This is Alex and this is his sister Naomi.' Mike introduced them.

'Hi,' Valerie smiled shyly at Naomi and Alex as she sat on the bed.

'Hello,' they chorused. Jeanette watched the children as they got familiar with one another. It was heart-warming, she loved children.

'What's his name?' Naomi pointed at the stuffed bear on the cupboard.

'She's a girl!' Valerie said as she picked the toy up.

'What's her name?' Naomi asked her.

'Darling.'

'Why'd you name your toy Darling?' Alex furrowed.

'I know right?' Jeanette chuckled quietly.

'There she is,' Jeanette heard Shanice say from behind her.

'What is it this time?' she whispered.

'Excuse me Nurse Jeanette! Nurse Jeanette?' Jeanette heard someone else call from behind her. She turned around. It was the new transfer doctor. He didn't look bad, the hospital lab coat was a good fit. Of course Shanice walked beside him like a magnet.

'Oh my…' she thought, almost frustrated.

'Sir?' She took a couple of steps away from the door.

'I need you to…' the man was saying before he saw Jeanette in an awkward position.

'What are you doing?' He asked her.

'Looking for a man,' Shanice teased.

'Excuse you?' Jeanette asked pissed.

'That's a little girl's room dear. She's got cancer,' Shanice winked.

'I know that!' Jeanette smiled at the woman. She was unbearable.

'I was just checking on the patient. She has some visitors.

'Uh… okay. There are some files I need your help with. Do you have a minute?' the man asked. He wasn't sure what was going on between the women and he certainly didn't want to get involved.

'I can help you Doc,' Shanice flickered her eyelashes as she smiled at the doctor. Was she seriously flirting with the man?

'Wasn't she just mocking me for being single?' Jeanette blinked in surprise.

'The former doctor said Jeanette'd know what to do,' the doctor smiled.

'So, do you have a minute?' he asked Jeanette again.

'Sure. Where are the files?' Jeanette asked.

'In my office. Shall we?' He motioned for them to get going.
