I heard buzzing in my ears first, then I opened my eyes little by little, my brain took time to know that I was in a hospital. I looked around me.
"Oh great you woke up." I heard a female voice next to me. I turned my head to see who it was. I recognized her by her hair ends dyed blue.
"Miss Davis! What the..." I try to sit up but she holds me back.
"Please call me Gina. I'll tell them you're awake" Then she walked out, I started to remember what had happened, the guy on the dance floor, the broken bottle, the blood, then everything else was blank. I looked at my arm, it was covered with a bandage.
The doctor entered the room, Greg Davis behind him. What was he doing here?
"Miss Wyatt how are you feeling?!"
"My arm hurts like hell"
"It's normal, your wound was deep but you were lucky because no veins were affected. You just have some stitches."
He measured my blood pressure and scribbled things down in a notebook.
"Your blood pressure is back to normal, I'm going to prescribe painkillers and anxiolytics for your hematophobia. Come back in two weeks to have your stitches removed. A nurse will bring you the prescription."
"Thank you Doctor." I told him then he left. Mr. Davis accompanied him to the door.
"Phew! there was more fear than harm." said Gina sitting down.
I tried to sit up again without leaning on my injured arm but it was difficult because it was my right arm that was injured and I was right handed.
"Wait, I'll help you." Gina stood up and helped me out of bed.
"Thank you" I smiled at her. That's when I noticed that she had the same eyes as her brother.
"Why are you here?" my curiosity got the better of me, I couldn't understand why it was them who were here.
"I was with Greg when it happened and as the ambulance was slow to arrive he insisted on bringing you himself and I accompanied him."
"That's nice of him. What happened to the other guy?"
"Oh don't worry, Greg will make sure he knows how to behave around women." I frowned. I wanted to ask her what that meant. But Mr. Davis came into the room.
"I have your meds, we can go." he had an envelope in his hands.
Gina helped me put on my shoes and I stood.
"How much do I owe you for the meds?" I felt very uncomfortable that he had paid for my medication.
He looked at me indignantly.
"You know Miss, normally I would take that as an insult but I'm going to put it down to the fact that a few minutes ago you were unconscious."
He held the door for us and we walked out. Gina held out her hand to me so that I could lean on her. I grinned at her.
"You know my legs are OK."
"Sorry..." she grinned too.
I hate hospitals, and even more the emergencies. I tried to walk without looking around me. We were almost at the exit, when I heard a child crying, and without wanting to,I turned around to see him, the little boy had a wound on his forehead, and there I felt my legs weaken, my breathing quickened and my heart was pounding. I felt the panic attack rising. Then I felt myself being picked up, and a few seconds later I was in Mr Davis's arms. Even in his arms I felt dizzy.
A few minutes later he put me on a bench outside the hospital.
"Miss Wyatt, look at me." I tried to look at him. "It's over, you can breathe, breathe with me."
He made me do breathing exercises. I had trouble getting my breathing back to normal, then Gina arrived with a bottle of water. She gave it to me, I took a sip and began to regain my composure.
"I'm sorry about all this.!" I tell them, they were both standing in front of me looking at me worriedly.
"It's nothing sweetie." Gina sat down next to me. "How are you feeling?" she asked, taking my arm.
"I'll be fine I think."
Mr Davis was silent but I could feel his gaze on me, I was ashamed of the scene I had just done, so I didn't even dare to look at him. "Let's go before another injured person arrives because this time we risk losing you." he joked as he helped me up. I laughed in spite of myself, and Gina also laughee at the joke.
It was dark outside the hospital, and it was windy. So Mr. Davis took off his suit jacket and put it around my shoulders.
"Thank you sir."
"You know your sister was cold too"Gina teased him
"Yes, but you're not sick" he replied.
"I'm not sick, I'm just injured." I retorted.
"Oh no, you stay stubborn even when you're sick." we had just arrived at his car, he opened the door for me.
"Injured" I insisted again as I got into the car. I heard Gina chuckle as she was entering the car too. Davis also entered and started the car.
I found my watch in the back seat. It must have slipped when they took me to the hospital. It was 12:14am. At this time I should be working.
"I would like to know Miss, what really happened with this guy?"
"Nothing too special, he's a regular at the nightclub and there are morons who think that because we serve them with a smile they have the right to do what they want with us."
"The motherfucker." Mr Davis swore. "I'm going to make sure he spends at least two long months in prison. Then I don't want to see him in my nightclub anymore."
"You know sir these are the risks of the job,if it's not him it'll be someone else, we do this knowingly."
He looked in the rearview mirror and our eyes met. I looked away when Gina spoke.
"Listen without wanting to interrupt your discussion, you're not at work here, frankly these Miss Mr. are getting on my nerves. His name is Greg and you..." she took the medicine envelope which was attached to the prescription and read my name.
"You are Meghan, is it so difficult to call each other by your names?!"
Nobody answered her, we just smiled.
I liked Gina, she wasn't a spoiled rich kid. She was funny and very nice.
The rest of the trip we talked about the nightclub, the fact that Fred had managed to calm the other customers and they had continued the evening as if nothing had happened. Then Gina told me that she had been living in Miami for a few months, and that she didn't have many friends here. She told me that she was happy to have a new one and she made me promise that I would go and visit her at her house.
"I'll promise you with pleasure but the thing is that I work a lot, and I rarely have time for myself."
"Yes but now you're injured, I don't see how you're going to be able to work with one arm."
And that's when reality hit me. My right arm was out of order for at least two weeks. What if my boss at the restaurant decides to fire me. He couldn't afford to go without an employee for two whole weeks. And even if he did, I had just said goodbye to the salary and the tips of the two weeks to come. Maybe I could convince him to let me do the little things that didn't take too much effort like washing the dishes, sweeping the floor while waiting for me to recover. I tried to move my bandaged arm,the pain was still intense just by a simple movement.
"The doctor said you should avoid making sudden movements with your arm and avoid lifting heavy objects." Mr Davis who was looking at me in the rear view saw what I was trying to do.
I didn't answer, and we drove in silence to the apartment.
I thought they were going to drop me off and go home, but Mr. Davis parked the car well and they both got out. They followed me to the door.
"You know from here to my bed I'm in no danger of fainting." I joked.
"Oh no miss, you're not getting rid of us like that, we need to make sure you eat well and take your meds." Gina answered.
I rolled my eyes.
My apartment keys and my phone were in my bag in the locker room at Skylight. So I had no choice but to knock on the door. A few minutes later I heard footsteps, the lights came on.
"Sorry I don't have my keys." I say right after the door opens to Flo nearly asleep. He ran his fingers through his eyes when he heard my voice.
"Meg, what are you doing here at this hour?" my bandaged arm was covered by Mr Davis's jacket so he didn't see it right away because he noticed that I wasn't alone.
"Oh come in, please." he opened the door wide and let us all in.
"What is happening?" Flo whispered in my ear.
"Nothing ." I hid my injured arm from him at all costs to prevent him from making it a big deal in front of them.
"Well this is Flo,my best friend and my roommate. Flo, you already know Mr. Davis, and this is Gina his sister." I made introductions.
"You have a nice apartment." said Gina sitting down on the couch.
"Thank you Gina." I replied.
"Can I bring you something to drink? We don't have much, but there's lemonade and beer." Flo proposed to them.
"I would like some beer, please." Gina answered.
"Give Miss Wyatt something to eat, she needs to take her medications." Mr. Davis retorted.
Flo frowned and looked at me
"Medications? What do you have?" he asked me.
"It's nothing." I showed him my arm.
"Oh my God, Meg what happened?"
"It's nothing serious, I had a little accident, that's all. I'll tell you about it later. Bring some beer for Gina, please."
"Okay, I ordered pizza, I'll heat it up for you right away, anyone want a pizza?" he asked them.
"I would like that yeah, you know what, I'll help you heat that up."
And she got up and went behind Flo. We stayed in the living room with Mr. Davis. The kitchen was right behind the sofa. We could hear Flo and Gina whispering as if they didn't want to be heard.
"I'm sorry for all this inconvenience." I told Mr Davis to break the silence.
"You already apologized you know?!" he said smiling. It was rare to see him smile. And I had to admit that he had a beautiful smile. He was completely different from his sister who was always cheerful and smiling.
Flo and Gina came back with three plates and three beers and a lemonade for me. Gina sat next to her brother and Flo next to me.
Gina started telling Flo everything that had happened.
"So you're not going to be able to work, are you."
"I don't know yet."
"No you won't work, the doctor said that..."
"We don't care what the doctor said, you know some people need to work to live ." I don't know what I was thinking about to say that,it just flipped out like that. Everyone stared at me.
"What I mean is that I can't afford to sit idly by for two whole weeks."
"But don't worry, we understand you, don't we, Greg?!" Mr. Davis didn't speak, he just finished his slice of pizza.
"But you didn't touch your beer" Gina had just finished hers and took her brother's. But he took it from her.
"We gotta go Miss Wyatt needs to rest."
"But relax bro, you don't need to be so rude, we don't want to waste it." she took it again and drank a few sips then she put it down.
" I like her." Flo said grinning.
"Okay guys ,we have to go. Thanks for the pizza and the beer."said Gina standing up.
We all got up.
"I'm the one who has to thank you, I don't know what I would have done today without you two."
"It was with pleasure sweetie, in addition I made new friends so it was a win-win."
She hugged me and hugged Flo too.
"I hope to see you again very soon." then she left. Mr. Davis was right behind her.
"Thank you too sir for taking care of her." Flo told him. By holding out his hand.
"It's normal." they shook hands. Then he added "Make sure she takes her medicine well."
"You can count on me."
"Have a good night." He looked at me, smiled, then he left. Flo closed the door and looked at me with a teasing smile.
"What?" I asked him
"No nothing."
