Claire gulped in nervousness, Jess was staring at her which made her feel uncomfortable, "So, you want to work her? Have you ever worked in this field before? Since how long you have been baking?" She asked all this question in one breath.
Claire took a deep breath and said, "I have never worked in any bakery or cafe before, but I'm quite good at this." she tried to be as confident as she could be.
Jess nodded her head and opened the box, she was quite impressed when she saw the cake, but she didn't let it show on her face.
Claire baked a strawberry cake which had shades of red and and white and some small pieces of strawberries on the top.
"It looks good, but are you confident it tastes as good?"
Claire smiled confidently and replied, "Yes, it will taste as good as it looks."
Jess was impressed by Claire's confident, she took the fork and butter knife that was beside her on the table, she cut a small piece of cake with the butter knife.
Taking a small bite from it, she was shocked to see how it tastes so good, Claire never worked in any bakery but she was quite good at baking.
Jess was sure that if she gives Claire the job, this cake would be the most popular. "Where did you learn to make this?"
Claire clenched her fist, she didn't wish to talk about her but she had to reply, "My mom taught me."
Jake noticed how Claire looked uncomfortable while talking about her mother, he just wished that Jess gives her the job, that would help him to be a little more closer to her.
Jess got up from her chair and was about to leave, Claire was disappointed, feeling sad, she thought that she was rejected, but when Jess turned to Claire and said, "From tomorrow you can join but don't be late, Jake will tell you everything related to your month's salary and working hours." Saying that she walked away.
Claire was in shock she was just staring at Jess's retreating back, "Congrats, Claire you got the job!" Jake came towards her with a wide smile on his face, he was really happy for her and himself.
Claire had some tears in her eyes, 'Does it feel like this when you achieve something on your own?' She wonders, she felt as if her heart was dancing inside.
When she recovered from the shock, she jumped on her feets, thanking Jake a million times, "Thanks, it's all because of you!" She gave him a side hug, "Off course not, it's all thanks to your baking skills."
Jake suggested that they should celebrate a little and asked her to have a coffee with him, she wanted to tell this to her dad first but Jake was a big help so she agreed.
They went back in the coffee shop and celebrated, after a while Claire left as it was two twenty in the afternoon. As she walked towards the apartment, she gave a call to her dad, she waited for him to pick up the call.
"Hello, Claire so you finally know you have a dad!" He joked, making Claire chuckle, "Dad, I have something important to tell you!" Claire said excitedly.
Her dad was now curious that what made his daughter so happy, this was the first time after she left home that she was this happy.
"What happened? Did you and Jason decided to get married?"
Claire couldn't even laugh at that, her father did like Jason a lot, "Dad! What makes you think that?"
"Is that important, tell me what makes my daughter so happy today?"
"Not like this, I will meet you at home today then I will tell you about it!"
"Claire actually..." Her dad sounded a bit hesitant, "What happened are you busy?"
"Actually, today I'm going out with your sister and Maria, you can join us if that's okay with you." He said, knowing very well that she was never comfortable with Maria, and she never went out with them.
"No, it's fine dad, I can talk about this some other time." Claire tried to sound as cheerful as she can, she never went with them because she always felt like she was intruding their family time.
She hung up the call before her dad could say anything, she was sure he knew she was sad, but she didn't want to hear anymore.
As she reached the apartment, she walked in, she went to the kitchen and drank chilled water, it was quite hot in the afternoons.
She sat down on the couch and she wanted to share this with someone, she taught to call Jasmine, but she might be busy so she dismissed that taught.
She realised that she had no one right now to share this news, she sighed and slumped on the couch, she was scrolling the contacts in her phone, but their were only the phone numbers of her dad, Maria, Emily, Jasmine, Jake and some emergency numbers.
The only new people in her contacts were Austin, Jason's grandma and Jason's number.
She tossed her phone aside and closed her eyes, but suddenly she started hearing someone's whisper, she opened her eyes and started looking everywhere, but couldn't see anyone, she was feeling scared now.
She was hearing someone saying hello, but the voice was so low that it was clear what that voice was saying, suddenly she turned towards her phone and widen her eyes as she noticed.
While tossing her phone she dialed Jason's number, hurriedly picking up the call she said, "Hello."
"Claire! I was talking since a minute why didn't you reply?"
Claire noticed he wasn't sounding angry, he was actually sounding worried, but she didn't know what to say, 'I thought that you were a ghost!'
"Hello, Claire can you hear me?"
"Yeah, I can, sorry I mistakenly called you."
"Oh, that's it?" Jason was disappointed, "Hmm." Claire replied.
"Is there nothing you want to talk about?" He questioned, Claire did wanted to talk to someone, share her happy news, but she was debating whether she should talk to Jason or not.
