He was practically bored. He'd come here with Conner in hopes of relaxing and getting himself distracted with a can of soda but it didn't seem to be working so far. He'd already consumed three cans and was on his way to taking down the fourth .He took up one of the cans and scanned around out of boredom. He wasn't hungry and wished he'd stayed back in class or had gone back to the dorm for a quick nap. He leaned back on his seat and shut his eyes close for a fleeting moment
"Aren't you going to the clinic today. You seem bored... and not hungry", Janice said to him taking out her tabloid and typing something on it before putting it back. Davis opened his eyes at this,
"Emette isn't in, I wanted to take a break"
"Where's Derek?, he rarely shows up for lunch",she took an apple and cut it in halves, slipping one piece into her mouth.
"Well, if you're so concerned, you could bring him sandwich",Conner said, "You know his perfect spot, the woods behind the lacrosse field",he winked at her. Davis raised his brows at this.
"Conner, why don't you bring it instead"
"I'm sure he wouldn't be happy to see me"
"And I'm pretty sure it's not a good idea to encourage Janice into invading his free time" Davis said, making Janice frown.
He was right. The last thing anyone wanted to do was to barge into Derek's space. He cherished it so much. The group fell silent for a while. Davis continued sipping his soda and this time, a little bit slower. His eyes scanned the lunchroom, searching for a distraction. Finally, his eyes fell on one. The new girl with the silver coloured hair.
He watched her make her way to a table where another girl wearing glasses sat, in sheer delight. The girl had red hair, which was also rare, just like her friend's. Oddly enough, she looked familiar. He tried to rack his brain on where he'd seen her.
Suddenly, he remembered. The redhead worked part time as a paramedic at the clinic. A medical student in her third year. Now he thought about it ,he seldom saw her on days he went to help Emette with his researches.
He watched the two girls chatter on for some time. They both seemed to be good friends. Then, he saw the redheads expression change to that of bewilderment and wondered what they were talking about. All of a sudden, he wanted to know, quaint duo.
He decided to do something he hadn't done in quite a while. Tapping into his demon ability .
Tapping into their abilities required a lot of soul energy so they rarely made use of it. But since this ability was what he and Derek shared as twin demons, it barely took anything from them. They also came from a descendant of demon overlords, the first demon rulers of the underworld, so they were more privileged than turned demons.
He concentrated hard on the sound waves coming from the girls direction, trying to increase its range. Soon he picked up their voices amidst the numerous chattering in the room and could hear every word they said which sounded like echoes in his head. This ability they harnessed was a rare one. Something he and Derek were envied for.
He heard Natalie talk about lunch with Conner in a low voice, like she didn't want anyone to hear her. There and then, a crazy idea popped up in his mind. One that amused him and was sure to discomfort the other group.
He then turned to Conner with a dubious smile.
* * *
Conner wasn't sure of what was in Davis head. He couldn't care any less and besides, two more companies wouldn't hurt. Before he knew it, he was on his feet as he strode towards their table.
"Hi... ladies",he showed off his pleasant smile which he knew would win any girl over.
"Conner...", Natalie looked surprised when he waved at her. She hadn't thought he would come .
"Um... this is my friend, Kira"she said to him.
"Yeah, I think I've seen her..." Conner said as though he was trying to remember where he'd seen the redhead.
"right! you work at the clinic, part time",he said, with a smile.
Natalie looked at Kira who tried to force a smile. She'd never been to the clinic and didn't know Kira worked there. Now she thought about it, they never opened up much about themselves.
"So... what do you girls say about joining us" he asked looking towards the other end of the lunchroom where his sister and Davies were sitting.
"No Conner, we..." she began, and stopped just in time to see Davis amused look, "wouldn't like to impose ourselves" she finished, turning back to him almost immediately.
"you won't, besides I owe you lunch",he pressed on.
She pursed her lips and turned to Kira for a suggestion but her eyes seemed to be saying "you brought it, deal with it". Finally, she took a long breath and looked up to Conner
"Okay... one lunch wouldn't hurt", her lips widening a bit into a half smile.
