Having a meal with them was sort of... not what she envisioned. At least, she hadn't expected her day to turn out the way it did.
She could feel eyes glancing towards their way at intervals as though she and Kira had committed a crime by sitting together with the group. Most people were astonished to see the new girl and her friend sharing a table with the most popular kids in campus. She wouldn't blame them. Even she was surprised at the sudden turn of event. It was something startling.
Natalie made up her mind to ignore all these and focused more on trying to ingest her food. Looking at Kira she could guess her poor friend was trying to do the same . Kira had advised her on people to steer clear of if she wanted to have a peaceful college life but somewhere in the middle of heeding to her words, they both ended up in their present situation.
Conner made light talks after their introduction. He was yet to understand why Davis insisted to bring the girls over when he knew they wouldn't be comfortable. One was a minor while the other was in her middle year. It was hard to spot minors sitting together with senior students not to talk of them who received special treatment in school because of their background.
The girls talked a bit more with Janice when Kira started to cough. Her food had gone down the wrong pipe. With a slightly raised brow, Davis who hadn't said much since they came passed her a bottle of water which she gratefully accepted. She took a few gulps and heaved a breath
"You should eat more carefully" Janice said as she took the water can from her, "we wouldn't want an afternoon lunch to end up with having to send you to the clinic"
Davis suppressed a smirk as a result of the remark. Natalie turned her gaze to Janice. She had come to know from their introduction that Janice was Conner's sister. It was believable since the both had the same pair of jade green eyes .
"So, Natalie..." Janice shifted her attention to meet her gaze, "you didn't say which department you're in"
"Me? I'm in the business department" she answered. Janice stared at her blankly
"I really thought you were in the science field... like your friend",she muttered, "I've seen her a couple of times in anatomy grade 2 class. Wait, I think you work at the clinic".
Kira gave her a small smile which showed she was right. Natalie wondered just how smart Kira was to be promoted to a higher level in the course. Anatomy grade 2 was only studied by fourth year students from what she learned but it seemed like the school made an exception for Kira judging her intelligence.
When Natalie looked at Davies, she noticed the subtle difference between him and Derek. Davis didn't have those hardened, overbearing eyes of Derek rather his was milder, almost as if they had a touch of softness in them and though he didn't say much, she noticed he had a polite smile on his lips whenever her eyes met his.
Janice steered the conversation in uncomfortable moments. After sometime, the two girls relaxed and soon they were done and ready to leave.
"We should do this more often... hope to see you girls some other time",Davis spoke up, a sly smile plastered on his lips. They all stared at him like he was crazy. Natalie and Kira were short of words. They had barely managed to scale through lunch and was sure there won't be a next time.
They bade the group bye and turned right in time to see Leila who had just arrived the lunchroom with her friends. She gave Natalie a scornful look, turned and left like she had arrived.
"One more person to worry about",Kira gave out a tired sigh and left together with Natalie.
