Her entanglement with David

"Yes, I do know him," Rose replied with a smile.

Ruby stepped closer, her curiosity piqued. "How do you know him?"

"I can't answer that, but I'd like to know how you know him first.", Rose interjected, her tone playful yet probing.

"So, you're not going to tell me?"

"Correct!, If you won't share how you know him. All I came to discuss was my intention to run this company. Well, Take care, Mum," Rose said, walking away with a newfound sense of freedom.

As she closed the door behind her, Rose reflected on her mother's strange behavior during their conversation. She sensed there was something Ruby was hiding—perhaps something related to David Armstrong that her mother didn't want her to know.

Just then, her phone rang. It was Granny. Rose answered cheerfully.

"Hello, my sweetheart," Granny said, her voice cheerful.

"Hi, Granny."

"I heard you're back, my baby!"

"Yes, Granny. I'm at work right now, but I'm heading home soon."

"Dorris prepared your favorite meal."

"I'm on my way!"

"Good day, sir. Mr. David Armstrong, right?" Rachel asked him.

"Yes, that's me," he replied, his tone steady while trying to maintain a calm demeanor.

"Can I still meet with Mrs. Alessandra Goldie?" he asked, hopeful.

"No, sir. The only reason you're here again is because Miss Rose Goldie requested I return your card," Rachel explained.

"Mrs. Rose Goldie?"

"Yes, Mrs. Ruby's daughter," Rachel added, expecting him to recognize the name.

"Thank you, by the way." David said before leaving.

David couldn't shake off the encounter at the Goldie organization. How had his card ended up in Alessandra's daughter's hands?

"Mrs. Dorris, I've really missed your cooking," Rose said, savoring her meal.

Dorris smiled, her eyes twinkling with warmth.

"I knew you'd miss her cooking! You'll miss mine too," Granny chimed in, delighting in watching Rose eat.

Dorris, not one for conversation, quietly attended to her tasks.

"How was work?" Granny asked, shifting the conversation.

"It was fine. I didn't do much—just checked in on Mum, and she seemed to be managing well."

"That's what she wants you to think," Granny replied, her tone hinting at deeper concerns.

"How are you doing, Granny?" Rose quickly changed the subject.

"I've been well, dear. Dorris has been taking good care of me. You'll be resuming work tomorrow, right?"

"Well, the thing is, Mum said I could work only if she permitted it," Rose explained.

"Then it's high time we go through your father's will. He left shares under your name." Granny pointed out.

"Okay, but I'm tired of talking about work. I want to tell you about someone special," Rose said, her excitement bubbling over.

Granny's eyes sparkled with interest, happy to be Rose's confidante. "Okay, who is this someone special?" she winked.

"He's my everything," Rose announced, laughterin her voice.

Ruby returned home late, having spent some time at a bar before heading back. James helped her inside, and Dorris guided her to her room.

Once inside, Ruby swayed slightly, her head spinning. Dorris offered her a cup of tea to help alleviate the effects of the alcohol.

"Dorris, is that you?" Ruby slurred.

"Yes, ma'am, it's me," Dorris said, handing her the cup.

Ruby gulped it down, grimacing at the taste.

"Do you need anything else, Mrs. Ruby?" Dorris inquired gently.

Suddenly, Ruby burst into tears. "Why does this world have to be so small?"

Dorris didn't get what she meant until she heard Ruby say, "David is back."

Dorris, who had known David long before Ruby's marriage, recognized the name. As Ruby's personal maid during Ruby's teenage years, she had always viewed Ruby as a spoiled brat who had led a frivolous life, ultimately resulting in her entanglement with David. Dorris remembered how Ruby had gotten pregnant before her 20th birthday.

---

Thanks to the tea, Ruby soon fell fast asleep. Dorris quietly closed the door behind her, exhaling with relief. Memories of the young man she had once urged Ruby to avoid flooded her mind. "Why is he back now?" she wondered.

The last time she saw him was at his arrest—an event she had somehow orchestrated with Ruby's parents. Well, it had been her, Dorris who had reported David to Ruby's family, leading to his imprisonment years ago.

Ruby had been blissfully unaware, preparing for her marriage to Elliot. While Dorris watched the injustice unfold in the life of David. She felt he deserved it although he was a youth.

---

"Dorris, why are you standing there at this late hour?" Granny Goldie asked, her voice cutting through the silence.

Dorris was startled. She quickly omposed herself and spoke in her aged voice, "Ehm, Mrs. Ruby wasn't feeling well, so I went to aid her."

"Really?" Granny replied, surprised.

"But she's fine and fast asleep now.", she replied immediately, trying to reassure her, when she noticed her move to check on her.

"I think it's best to let her rest," Dorris suggested, hoping to avoid further questioning.
