Pathetic:

Weekend.

Everyone love that word.

Everyone except Laura.

Reason? We don't wanna get into depressing details.

Laura was woken up by cheerful voice of Leigh which contradicted her gloomy attitude that week.

Leigh had been gloomy since Liz moving out of the country happened.

Liz.

Laura.

These two have not talked since the hospital fiasco. Laura has been taking 'time to heal' as Alex often puts it while Liz you know...

So Laura definitely is clueless about Liz still being in the country.

She is also pretty clueless about BlakeLiz affair.

Laura freshened up a little quickly and made sure she was somehow descent before leaving her room.

She halted at the sight of Alex and Carol in her living room.

I mean she expected everything but not the two of them together.

Alex who had been, since childhood, feeding her manly ego, tagging along with her baby sister on a Saturday morning was a big deal.

She could have made fan of Alex if things were like before. Too bad she couldn't even hold a single conversation with them.

She waved at them before proceeding into the kitchen to get some refreshment for her friends.

"She fucking waved?"

Alex chuckled to what her sister said.

"Smoke." He said suddenly

Carol jumped in fright earning a playful smirk from her brother.

"Where?"

"From your ears."

Carol looked at him frustrated. She didn't have time to deal with her brother's old-men jokes.

"Your jokes can easily give you a pass as an old man. Even that face wouldn't help."

She fumed.

Alex was going to say something when they noticed Laura coming out of the kitchen.

Carol looked past her probably waiting for someone else to come out but got disappointed.

"Where is Liz?"

She was curious.

Even Alex was curious even though he didn't want to poke his nose.

Laura was quiet for a long time which rubbed Carol the wrong way but before she snapped,

"Here. Mommy didn't even say hi."

That was Leigh who was half-dragging Liz from the kitchen.

Alex looked at the two friends. One who was wishing to be invisible and the other one who was on the verge of crying because of guilt.

True.

Laura didn't want to be there.

She wanted to be alone.

That was the fucking plan all along...locking herself in her bedroom.

But then her siblings-friends came over and she thought of entertaining them for an hour or less.

But Liz happened again.

Earlier when she went into the kitchen, she paused at the sight of Liz who was not supposed to be there. She was happy seeing her. She wanted to throw herself at her and hold her tightly and tell her how much she missed her and tell her not to joke about leaving again...

But she didn't.

She was nervous.

So...she thought she was just gonna pour the juice in the glasses and leave.

As she was leaving, her friend's voice stopped her. "Hi," to which she nodded.

A fucking nod.

She was not proud of it.

She felt pathetic.

"Are you still mad at her?"

Carol asked irritated. She still hadn't forgotten about the hospital farewell thing.

Laura didn't say anything but that didn't mean she was not thinking about it.

Was she still mad at Liz?

No.

Was she ever mad at Liz?

No

Then?

She was fucking nervous with her friends. That's how pathetic Laura thought she became.

It was the first time she felt like this with her friends.

Nervous.

Uncomfortable.

Scared.

She was scared of everyone. She was scared of her best friend. She was scared of emotions.

Carol was almost snapping when Alex glared at her. She was going to make things worse.

Alex understands Laura. He has seen her slowly withdrawing from everyone.

Since the miscarriage incident, she changed. It hurt him seeing her like that but he couldn't help it. He couldn't help her.

That made him also feel pathetic.

Pathetic.

That's what Liz was also feeling. She couldn't blame her friend for becoming that way. She blamed herself entirely. Just after she found out about the miscarriage, something that only them knew, she made plans to leave the country. The fact that Laura disclosed that to them was enough to tell them that she was entrusting them with her feeling, her emotions but she didn't think it wise to stay with her friend.

Her friend's trouble couldn't make her stay but Blake, whom she had just met, made her stay.

The feeling of betrayal coupled with pity.

Pathetic.

There was silence in the room until it was broken by Derrick's voice.

"Mommy, can i go gaming with uncle Thomas?"

Laura looked at him, relief evident in her eyes.

She just found a reason to leave all these discomfort and she was not going to waste it.

"Let's go get you ready."

And just like that she left.

"She'll be fine don't feel bad."

Alex said in an attempt to console the woman who looked like she was almost crying.

"Don't feel bad? When she treated us like lazy gossipers who knocks at people's door at dawn to gossip."

Alex looked at Carol amused. It is always amusing watching her sister all frustrated.

"Don't you dare say that at her face if you still want to be her friend." Alex warned.

"Who said we still want to be her friend. She's the one who should apologize to us if she still wants to be our friend." Carol rebuted.

"Yes we still want to be her friends and you should listen to your brother Carol or we'll end up pushing her away."

Liz said softly before running away.

Carol stood up intending to follow her when she was held back by her brother's strong gasp.

"Wish you were half as reasonable as Liz. Why are you this dense?"

Alex's hypothetical smoke could now be seen coming out of her ears and nose and eyes.

Jokes aside. She was raging.

"Before you say something stupid proving your dumbness hear this."

After making sure he had her attention, he continued.

"Your friend has been through alot. She is going through alot right now. Two deaths in a month. What she's doing right now is just a reflex reaction to everything. She is withdrawing from her close ones because that way it wouldn't hurt when they leave."

Carol looked down in embarrassment. What her brother said made sense. Then she thought of the first time she saw Laura emotionless. That was after the miscarriage. In the hospital when Liz had decided to leave. Her decision to leave seemed to have strengthened Laura's resolve to withdraw.

"Then Liz's..."

"Don't you dare say what you want to say right now in front of those two. You'll make Liz feel bad and she's already blaming herself right now." Alex interrupted before she could talk.

Alex could see everything. He knew Laura and he understood her. He just hoped Laura and Liz could go back to being close as before.
