Chapter 20 You look too high

Turn on*

The bright light of the mana light fell to the tables as it illuminated the hall. 10 figures were sitting on the tables while looking at each other. Each of them wore either luxurious things or scientifically advanced clothes to prove their identities.

The woman who was wearing a uniform with wings on her chest opened her mouth. Despite her middle-aged looks, she was an elder in the council and her position was unshakable due to her authority in the force.

" We need more budget this month. Compared to the last month, slums and mines aren't sitting idly as their balance has been destroyed by the recently emerged Fire Gang. They collided with other gangs and took out the godfather."

She said while showing the picture of the dead man through the hologram. The dead man was holding a pistol, but he didn't look like a person who was willing to kill others for money.

The man with a white silk shirt snorted at her words. He didn't hide his displeasure about the slum area since he was an elitist.

" Last time, I warned you that they are dangerous elements. If you listened to my words, we could have avoided this meaningless problem. Do you think money grows on the trees?"

He spoke, showing a cold expression on his face. As the representative of the wealthy families, he didn't want to empty his pocket and he had certain chips in that area, so he wasn't willing to divulge the matter.

The woman narrowed her eyes with indifference as she gazed at the other council elders. They were looking at her with cold looks since she was talking about their money. In this country, only two things were important to them and those two were authority and wealth. To get those things, they needed to pay a few things on their end.

" My, my, my. We need to calm down for a moment. It is indeed hard to take out another hefty sum of money from the treasury, but it is for the safety of our citizens. We can't possibly think of our wealth, right?"

Felipe spoke while placing his hands on the table. His crafty eyes were observing the faces of those elders since they were practically his people. If he wanted to weaken them, it wasn't that difficult.

" I think he is right. Besides, the young officers are showing promising looks. Our university will send our latest inventions to them."

Zera agreed with him despite her hatred for him. She knew how dirty was his clan since she often clashed with him for the decision-making power.

She knew he was slowly eating their authorities through his so-called gifts.

" Then that is it. I don't mind being an arbiter in this meeting. We need securities for our newest logistical method."

The young woman in a black dress spoke while smiling innocently, but that didn't change their attitudes. Both Felipe and Zera understood what she was trying to say because she was the envoy of Roxan and held a tremendous amount of influence in the upper echelons.

Not only she was beautiful, but she was also powerful and clever enough to withstand against two biggest powers in the city with her sheer will.

" Hmm, fine. Who agrees with her request? 7 people to 3 people. Then it is decided. As for the next topic, I would like to propose the new portal technology. If we can connect it to Roxan. We can generate a huge flow of cash through the tax."

She smiled while showing the figure of zeros to them with pride. She genuinely loved this country and she was willing to impose taxes on the most powerful nation in the western continent.

" However, that will cause huge security issues. We can't ignore that their military weaponry is more advanced than some of our technology. They combine magic a technology since the creation of their first army."

The man with golden glasses said, shrugging his shoulder with uncertainty. The army of Roxanians was too powerful for them to face if they decided to invade through the portal.

" That is when the engineers of our city will come in handy. We will build a safety mechanism that will prevent that from happening. Am I right, vice headmistress?"

She turned her head in Zera's direction to show her confidence in their ability.
