Chapter 52: No Word Back From Hope

Tara’s POV

No matter what I did, I could still hear Sima’s words rushing through my head like a symphony. A chorus of something bad, something evil, an omen of a thing that we were not ready to behold.

A curse.

She had called it a curse.

No—a punishment. For what? For betrayal?

For mockery.

For breaking the trust that had been inlaid within us for so many years, through generations, throughout lifetimes and lifespans and—oh my god, was this my fault? Was it because of me? Nothing like this had ever happened before, had it?

If it did, Sima at least seemed resolved to find it. She had been held up in the library since she had figured out what it was that was wrong with us. Going through books, scriptures, ancient texts, accounts of other civilisations, h*ll, she even resorted to eating and sleeping in the library until she found something that would help us.

I felt myself becoming more and more eternally grateful to the girl’s existence.
