Chapter 164: A Shadowed Figure Lurking

Victor’s POV

I was dreaming again. I knew this because I couldn’t see my fingers. There was a visage of myself somewhere in this world that felt un-belonging, like I was only a guest here, invited by a presence and aspect that I couldn’t properly place. But I had been here before, had I not? I tried to look down at my hand, I tried to find that familiar red string that had been there before, connected to a phantom limb. But nothing of that sort was now seen, and instead of a string, I found emptiness.

A woman’s voice was fluttering in the air, as though it were carried on the back of a butterfly’s wings. A group of them flew passed, and my eyes followed until they settled on an empty face. One of them, larger than my hand, sat on the nose of a woman, and its wings opened and closed in a slow blink. When they opened fully finally, two black dots on the back of it resembled eyes, and the woman’s head tilted as though she were regarding me.
