Her Visitor

~~~CAT'S POV~~~
After 30 minutes, my aunt did appear. And as expected, as soon as she entered that door, she started chastising me.
"What am I going to do about you?" Those were her first words. And I swear, I am starting to get pissed hearing those same words within just an hour.
"I told you to quit your job for the millionth time!"
Yeah. She always tells me that every time she calls me. That has always been one of our topics and the reason why I always had to finish our call immediately. I started to retort back in my mind but didn't voice it out while plastering a smile on my face.
"Your Boss is always making you work overtime."
Uh...correction. My Boss has always been the most considerate boss I've ever met. And he has never asked his employees to work overtime. Well except a couple of days ago when he asked me to prepare everything for a short time before his son takes over their company.
We could have done it earlier to save ourselves from cramming but his son suddenly decided that he will be coming this week to take over the company. He didn't even give my Boss a warning.
That is why I am forced to work overtime.
"And why are you still living alone in that apartment? I already told you to find a roommate so that you'll have someone to look after you."
I never considered finding a roommate just so that there is someone to look after me, okay? And besides, I don't want anyone invading my private space. I always preferred to be alone.
"You are lucky that Doc Alvin finds you just in time. I can't imagine what could have happened to you if he didn't decide to visit you."
Yeah. Come to think of it. What could have happened to me if he didn't come? Well, I guess I'll be just waking up after a couple of days feeling fatigued and sticky. Though, I am glad that he decided to visit me last night, or was it the other night?
It was rare for him to visit me without notice. Usually, he would randomly send me a message if he wants to check out on me. Sometimes he would invite me out for lunch or would bring me dinner at my apartment. And every time he did that, he would send me a message first.
But last night was different. He just came right on time when I needed help. He was like my knight in shining armor when he arrived at my doorsteps last night. I thought I was going to die but the moment he came, I eventually thanked God in heaven for sending me one of his angels.
"Since when were you admitted again?" She stopped taking out some of my clothes from a duffel bag that she brought with her and turned to look at me.
"Last night?" I replied. Though I was not sure what time it was. Because the moment, Alvin found me, I already lost consciousness.
"Oh, God! You were really lucky. I don't know what I am going to tell your mom once we meet in heaven."
At the mention of my mom, I felt something prick my heart. I missed her. I miss my mom. I always tell myself that I have already moved on. But the truth is, I am not. Because I don't know how to move on.
My mom died three years ago. It was the darkest moment of my life. She has always been with me ever since the beginning of my existence. She raised me alone because my father died even before I was born.
My mom worked in a bank. That's how she managed to send me to school. She was the sweetest person I've ever known. She was my best friend.
That's why it was a huge shock to me when I returned home and found out that she was dead. I was never prepared. I cried all night beside her lifeless body asking her why she had to leave me suddenly. But I didn't find an answer until now.
I lost a mother. I lost my best friend. I lost a companion.
I snapped back from my thoughts when I heard my aunt nag at me again.
"Why don't you just get married so that you'll have someone to look after you?"
For a moment I thought I sensed an underlying message from her voice. I frowned. Does she know about Alvin's proposal? I shook my head at the thought. That's not possible. I never told anyone about it. Not even to my best friend Grace. More so, to my Aunt Molly.
I doubt Alvin told her about it. I don't think he is the type of person that would say something like that to anyone.
I met Alvin three years ago. When I was first hospitalized, he was my attending physician. After that, he was the one doing my follow-up check-ups.
For the first year, I would see him once a month. I had to go back to the hospital every month for a series of tests and check-ups. Then in the second year, my check-ups lessened every three months but we also started to see each other even outside the hospital.
I don't know how or when we started to become friends. It just happened. He became one of my few friends. It is rare to find true friends like him and Grace that would stay beside you even during your worst time.
Well, Alvin and I met in my worst situation and I am glad that he stayed after that.
But when he suddenly spoke out about that marriage proposal, I was in utter surprise. At first, I was confused but then he said that I don't have to work anymore and he would provide for everything that I need. I felt embarrassed and realized that he was just offering me sympathy.
So I immediately rejected his proposal.
I don't want him to be stuck with me. I am not his responsibility.
But he would still bring it up once in a while. Sometimes I would just hope that one day I fall in love with him, so maybe it would be easier to accept his proposal. But then I realized that if ever I did, I cannot marry him just because I love him. Of course, he has to love me as well.
"Catherine!"
I heard my Aunt increase the tone of her voice to catch my attention.
"Why are you zoning out there?"
I looked at my Aunt and gave her a cheeky smile. "I am thinking about who I should marry."
Aunt Molly suddenly hits my leg with the towel that is in her hand.
"You silly girl! How on earth will you ever get married when you don't even have time to date."
I pursed my lips. "Now are you telling me to go on a date after work? I thought you wanted me to have enough rest. You were always the one reminding me to head home immediately after work."
"You-"
I laughed seeing my aunt's reaction.
Aunt Molly is the elder sister of my mom. She is the only sibling she had and the only relative I know.
When my mom died, she took the responsibility of looking after me although I am already a grown-up.
She lives on the outskirts of the city simply because she hates city life. She is a simple person that wants a simple life.
Although she worries a lot about me, she cannot leave her place on the outskirts and I never wanted her to anyway. She has a small business there.
While she worries about me, I also worry about her. Because she lives there alone. She never married anyone until now. She is an old maid and sometimes I think that I would become an old maid as well just like her. Simply because I had never pictured myself married to anyone, even to Alvin.
I don't know why but I just think that it would be better if I lived alone.
I heard a knock on the door and suddenly it burst open and Alvin came into my view. Ever since I woke up, I've never seen anyone enter that door except for Aunt Molly and Alvin.
Aren't there supposed to be a nurse looking after me? But it was always Alvin. He is the one who checks my vitals and gives me my medicine.
"Aunt Molly." His gaze immediately softens upon seeing Aunt Molly.
"Oh! Doc Alvin!" Aunt Molly immediately hugs him. I rolled my eyes at them. Really? They've been acting stone-cold on me while with each other they look as soft as cotton candy.
Shouldn't I be treated well since I am the patient?
"I cannot thank you enough for saving my niece." Aunt Molly said as he reached to touch his face.
"It's nothing. Don't mention it." Then I saw him glance at me before he looked back at Aunt Molly. "Have you chastised her enough?" He asked. "If you are tired yet she is not even listening, I can take over from here." Continued sending me that glare.
"Seriously?" I exclaimed. They are acting like I am a child that needs a serious beating.
