Chapter 5: Survival of the fittest I

Now that everything was clear, she got back to her schedule. After crying her heart out, she didn't think about it anymore. He told her not to think of him and so she was doing that. She didn't want to see him either. They were in the same class but he sat on the left side and back of the class and she sat on the right side of the class, third from the front. It was easy not to see him, she carried her own lunch from home to avoid going to the cafeteria, it helped save money as well so it was a good plan.

"Ana, what's the answer?" A stern voice called. It was Algebra now, and Mr. Randell caught her spacing out.

"Uh?" She stared at the blackboard, contemplated for a few seconds, and said "-129"

Mr. Randell raised his eyebrow. He had written a big formula with some numbers to put in the formula and calculate the answer, when he saw Ana not using the calculator, he asked her to bring her attention back to class. But, she just blurted out the answer, "pfft, typical Ana," he thought but instead, he asked her a question he knew the answer to, "don't you need a calculator to know that."

"No," she was a genius after all.

Not far from her, she heard Mark scoff.

She was walking to her favorite spot for a lunch break. She carried her lunch box and drank water from her bottle while walking, someone abruptly bumped into her, she almost choked and water spilled and wet her face and sweater. The bottle fell from her hands with a thud and cracked spilling water out of it.

Everything happened so fast, she didn't know how to react and just stared at the person with a little frown.

"Careful where you walk, bitch!" Scarlette sneered while chewing gum.

People passed by and stared at the commotion. Not wanting to attract attention. she apologized instead even when she was not at fault. In fact, she had an idea why this was happening.

"I've seen the videos going around school, you walking where you don't belong, know what I mean?" She spoke close to her face.

"I know, I'm sorry... it won't happen again." She apologized again. Left with nothing else to say, Scarlette left bumping her on the shoulder yet again, "Hmmph," she added.

She stared at the broken bottle and the spilled water and sighed, she dried her face with her sleeve and picked up the bottle.

"Can I help you with that?" A guy asked.

She stared blankly at him and wondered if he was speaking to her. Seeing her hesitation he chuckled and walked closer to her, "I believe you need to dispose of that," he pointed at the bottle.

"Oh...yeah..." she awkwardly smiled.

"May I?" He took it before she rejected so instead she gave thanks.

The dustbin was in the same direction so they walked in awkward silence.

"My name is Logan by the way"

"Oh sorry, I'm Ana... nice to meet you"

He politely smiled. "It's fine. Also, I know who you are"

"Oh...right..." Of course, everybody knew her by now obviously.

Sensing her discomfort, he hurriedly added, "I.ve always known you, we're in the same fourth year, but I'm in the class next to yours, you've always led us in class," he laughed warmly to ease her and she smiled back. A pair of dimples gently resurfaced on her cheeks. She looked cuter than she already was if she smiled and laughed more, he mentally noted that.

They had reached the dustbin, Logan halted and so did she. "So, I'll see you around?" He looked at her with hopeful eyes.

"Yeah, I guess..." she politely added, "thanks again for the help."

"It's alright, it was a pleasure," and he left.

Meanwhile, at the cafe, a guy sitting far away from the direction he was staring, more like from who he was staring at, snorted,

"I still cannot believe you're doing this," he warned, "seriously you've lost it, man."

"That's because you can't see it yet. I have thought it carefully, either way, it's a win for me." Another guy sitting next to him replied.

"It's Luke you're trying to mess with, I don't see it becoming a win for you at all." A third guy retorted.

"That's where you two are wrong, It's Ana I'm trying to mess with. The girl's unbelievably thirsty, I need playtime, her crush rejected her, my girlfriend Bianca cheated on me with him, I need revenge on them, plus, someone could help me with my homework" He shrugged.

The two guys chuckled, "I thought Logan said he was over Bianca," the first guy said to the second guy while turning his head to face who he was staring at. Luke was having his lunch with his friends while Scarlette sat on his lap. Logan was angry at him because a week ago, he found Bianca doing it with him in the janitor's room. He hated it when girls shamelessly threw themselves at him, he was always second to Luke at everything. Looks, football, school, and girls. They were on different teams in football, and Luke always pissed him off because they always won. Only when a team from a different school match against them, does he find himself on the same team with him, regardless it changed absolutely nothing, he was always second.

He was there when Ana approached him and said those ridiculous things to him. He too found it funny considering she was speaking to the shameless playboy in school, yet something seemed off. He did not have to speak such things to her. He was never like that. Either he takes what you're giving right then and there, or he completely ignores you when uninterested. It wasn't like that though with Ana. The guy was obviously interested but, was in self-denial. If so, he was going to take that opportunity and get Ana first, use her body and dump her. Finally, he was going to be first at something.
