Chapter 47: It Didn't Have to Happen

Vanessa

I've never felt so much pain in my life.

I don't think I'll make it.

A sharp pain hits my lower tummy area.

Dr. Owens won't give me medication. He says it's too late for that.

Where's Brent?

Between bouts of pain, I rethink the moment it happened. I was walking from my accounting 101 class to my English class when a stupid boy on his skateboard skated toward me.

He didn't see me until it was too late.

I went left.

He went right, trying to stop. He pushed his skateboard to the left. I think he was trying to do one of those skateboard tricks.

It doesn't matter. My feet were caught up in the skateboard.

Now, here I am.

I can't sleep for twenty-four hours because I have a concussion.

I am in labor. It's two months too soon.

Dr. Owens is friendly and tells me information. He says the baby has a strong heartbeat.

Where's Brent?

The hospital door opens.

I'm hopeful. Maybe it's Brent. When he gets here, I know everything will be fine.

Grandpa Delta enters my room.
