Commissioner

Journee and Henry kept laughing at Jack. He too was aware that they were teasing him yet kept answering all their questions.

"That's her artist name," explained Jack.

"Huh!" both Journee and Henry were confused.

"You know like a stage name, a pseudonym," he explained. Journee and Henry looked at each other and nodded. "Her real name is Candice Brown."

"Tell me more," asked Journee.

"Well, she is 5'8", fair, slim, has a figure…" said Jack.

But Journee cut him mid-sentence with a show of her hand, "stop talking now. I asked about her not her measurements, idiot." She looked at Henry and said, "hit him for me, please. I can't get up from my seat every time he acts like a moron."

"With pleasure," said Henry and slapped the back of Jack's head.

"Hey!" shouted Jack but a look from Journee and was quiet.

"Continue," ordered Henry.

"Well, she is in New York for a shoot. Her Instagram update said that she is in Central Park shooting for an AD," informed Jack.

Journee rolled her eyes. "You know, I was thinking about sending someone to keep an eye on her but you and your insta, I don't need anyone."

"You are right," smiled Jack.

"And you are an idiot. Concentrate on your work, stop running after stupid girls, you massive flirt," scolded Journee. Henry kept smiling at Jack.

"You stop sleeping with men, I will stop flirting with women," Jack retorted back.

She would feel angry when anyone else would point out about her one-night stands, but she never cared if it would come from Henry or Jack. She was always ready for the banter. "I can stop sleeping with men the moment I want but you being a hopeless romantic won't be able to turn off your flirtation."

"Well, if I find a girl who is dreamy and not scary like you, I will stop flirting," teased Jack.

"You stopped flirting with her after she kicked your ass," mocked Henry.

"You don't have to remind me, that's why I said scary," he caressed his chin as if he was remembering her punch on his face.

"When is your jury getting back?" Journee asked.

"I don't know."

"It's better that you go and wait at the court," suggested Journee.

"Just say it, you want me out of here," said Jack, sarcastically.

"Finally! Something you understood," said Journee while looking at the heavens.

"You are mean," Jack stood up gritting his teeth.

"Thank you." Jack stood up from his seat and left the premises leaving Henry and Journee laughing out loud.

Henry took her phone and made copies of the photo and gave them to her. How the day flew past so fast, they had no idea. Jack came back with the good news that the verdict was guilty, and the culprit was sentenced to five-year prison.

With a final reminder to the IT team, Journee left for her home. She stopped her Jeep at the gate and gave her name to the system. The machine guns went back in their cover and the door opened for her after verification. After parking the Jeep in the garage, she entered the house where Kay was waiting for her at the door.

"You don't have to wait for me at the door every day," chimed Journee. Even though she was always happy to see him, she did not want to cause him any discomfort.

"It gives me happiness," he replied stoically.

"No, you are always scared that you won't see me again," but she knew the reason. He was afraid to lose her.

"That too. I almost lost you once, I am not going to lose you again," he said and caressed her cheeks with adoration.

She stood on her toes and placed her arms around his neck. "Kay! Nothing will happen to me, I promise, now let me take a shower, I need some warmth, please prepare something for me, I am hungry." She kissed him on his nose.

"Um…" he hesitated.

She immediately looked at his face and asked, "what?" he raised his eyebrows and tilted his head. She understood everything. "No, no, no…" she kept saying 'no' over and over and removed her hand away from his neck.

"But it's been a week," he pleaded.

"I cannot go before him. He has no idea that I put an illegal device to surveil Zion. I cannot tell him nor lie to him. He will know something is up," shouted Journee.

"But your Boss knows," contrasted Kay.

"Yeah, Captain knows, and I don't know what he tells CED. The point is he didn't approve any surveillance of the Hall family, if he gets to know that I went to his hotel without proper authorization, he will kill me. You know he is a stickler for law and order," cried Journee. She was on the verge of pulling her hair.

"But he called me to bring you to him," said Kay.

"Why didn't he call me?" she pouted.

"You know the answer."

"I would have made an excuse," she really knew the answer.

"Exactly!"

"Shit!" she shouted at the top of her lungs.

"Language!" scolded Kay.

"Oh, come on! I am not four anymore," she protested.

"You will always be four for me, now get ready," he hit on the top of her playfully.

"God, help us both," she exclaimed.

"Indeed!"

She ran up to her room and directly went inside the bathroom. She had a quick bath and came out wrapped in a towel. She spent a few minutes selecting which dress to wear and landed on a purple midi dress.

She wore her dress, blow-dried her hair and was ready to leave. She came out of her room and saw Kay dressed in a three-piece suit.

"We are not going to a funeral," she teased.

"Shut up!" he shouted angrily. She knew he hated the word funeral. He had attended a few of them in his life.

"Whoa! Okay, fine a marriage," she tried to make him laugh.

"Ahh… girl!" he shook his head and started smiling.

"Okay, why are you so dressed, tell me," she demanded.

"Because it is dinner and I have to show him respect," he replied.

"He is not the Don," mocked Journee.

"He is bigger than the Don."

"Fine, let's just move."

Journee sat in the driver's seat and Kay sat in the passenger seat. The moment he sat down, he pushed the seat all the way back as his long legs needed a lot of space. His large stature swallowed the seat whole. Journee in comparison to him really looked like a four-year-old.

The engine roared as soon as Journee twisted the key. The Jeep approached the gate and Journee enunciated "open gate" and like magic, the gate flung open in an instant. The moment they left the gate closed on its own.

On the way, they stopped to get some gifts and Journee bought a bottle of single malt whiskey and a pecan pie. After half an hour, they reached a suburban neighbourhood. The roads were empty except for the occasional cars passing by. The beautiful neighbourhood had perfect homes, perfect lawns, perfect cars. It appeared like something out of a catalogue.

She stopped the Jeep on the road outside one of those homes. They climbed the porch where house no. 1734 was displayed prominently. Above the house number was a name plaque which read "William Davis, Commissioner, NYPD".

Journee rang the bell and after a few seconds, the door opened. An old man who was too fit for his age, built like a strong bull stood before them. His deep eyes gained a twinkle after seeing Journee. She threw herself in his arm and he too lovingly embraced her in a bear hug.

He lifted Journee so that her legs were dangling in the air and took her inside the house. Kay followed them and closed the door behind him.

"Dad! Put me down," she pouted.

"So, I can't even hug my daughter," he emotionally blackmailed her.

"You can hug her, you can't lift her like a ragdoll. Also, take these away from my hands else I will drop them," she showed him the bottle and packet of pie in her hand.

He slowly placed her on the ground and let her go when could stand straight. "Fine. Here, give them."

"How are you?" she hugged him from behind while he placed those things on the dining table.

"Angry," sulked William.

"Whoa! Why?" she immediately let him go and faced him.

"You have no time for your father," grimaced William. Kay was loving the sweet drama between father and daughter. He was not a person to smile often but now he was grinning from ear to ear.

"Dad! Don't pout. You know I am busy," scolded Journee.

"Busier than the commissioner," William threw shade with style.

"Oh, come on! All you do is sit at your desk every day and sign boring papers," she mocked.

"Remind me what you do," he teased her back. Kay pressed his lips together and stifled his laughter.

"I, too, sign papers, but sometimes I accompany my detectives to the crime scene. I help them process the crime scene, gather witnesses, and even tell them what to do next. All you do is meet with politicians," she mocked again.

"Then why don't you do my job," he taunted her.

"One day, old man, one day," she squinted her eyes and accepted his challenge.

"Ha ha, now pour me that while I cook," he pointed at the whiskey bottle and ordered her.

"Let me help," interrupted Kay.

"Sorry my man, forgot to greet you, this girl hogs all my time," he went up to Kay and shook his hand.

"Hey!" pouted Journee.

"This girl hogs all our time," teased Kay.

"Real nice! Both of you." They all started smiling at each other.

They all sipped some whiskey while William kept preparing their dinner. After preparing their dinner, they all sat in the dining room and took their plates out. There was chicken, vegetables, salads, and bread.
