Chapter nine

Laura morphed into her wolf form, taking off into the night towards Drew's cave. The big wolf could live anywhere he liked and recently, Laura had come to learn that aside from his cave he was constantly in, he had a big mansion somewhere. She wasn't sure where he might be but she decided to try his cave first. After all, if he was somewhere, he had to be in his cave.

She got to the boundary that separated Alpha Drew's pack from the rest of the village. Laura trudged on, hoping that Alpha Jed and his useless son didn't pull up an unpleasant surprise. When it came to them, she couldn't trust them. After all, there was nothing they did that could make her trust them.

They made her life unbearable and Laura knew it was time for them to pay for all the pain and heartache they had caused her. There was no telling what they would do if they got their hands on her and this was something that she needed to avoid at all cost. They were bad people, very bad people indeed.

At the entrance of his cave, all was quiet and Laura had a feeling that the entire was not in. This was odd because she didn't expect a pack as large as Drew's to simply disappear.

''Where did they all go?'' Laura growled.

To a human, that would have sounded like an angry whimper. Laura walked along the dirt path, looking everywhere to see if she could find a clue. There was absolutely nothing that indicated that she would meet anyone in the cave.

Just then, an angry growl reached her ears and just before she could react, she felt a huge weight on her back. Laura growled, trying all she could do to free herself but the grip on her neck was so strong she was beginning to suffocate.

''Who are you?'' a voice said.

Laura recognized it to be Drew's. She was a bit surprised that the Alpha wolf didn't recognize her. It was odd to her because he usually picked up on her scent the minute she walked into his cave.

''Drew, its me Laura.'' she said.

''Laura?'' Drew asked.

He rescinded his hold on her, morphing back into his human form. Laura morphed back as well only then was there a small smile on his face.

''How come you didn't pick up my scent?'' Laura asked.

''Well, I couldn't. You smelt just like them that's why i was on my guard.'' Drew said.

Even in the dim moonlight, Drew could see the look of confusion written all over her face. Laura didn't understand one bit of what he was saying which left her all the more confused.

''I don't understand.'' Laura said.

Drew chuckled, walking towards a huge rock that sat at a corner of the huge field he and his pack occupied.

''You went to the annual ball right?'' he asked.

''Yes, I did. In fact, that's the main reason why I'm here. I need to tell you something.''Laura said.

''Okay. Go on.'' Drew said, climbing the rock.

He laid on his back, staring at the moon that stood far away from them. It seemed like the moon goddess wasn't her best today, judging by the way the moon was so dim.

''But first, i need you to tell me why you couldn't pick up my scent.'' Laura said.

''Well, for starters, anytime a wolf is mixed with other wolves, especially the ones that are bad, they pick up their scent immediately. As long as they are in their midst, they are bound to smell like them and even when they stay with them for a longer period of time, they begin to act like them. That's just the way it is.'' Drew explained.

Laura had never heard something like that before but she was glad Drew took out time to explain to her.

''That means if i mix with you guys for a long time, i'm bound to smell like you right?'' Laura asked.

''Exactly.'' Drew said.

''But that leaves me in danger right? If I mix with you, Alpha Jed and his son could easily smell me out even in the thickest of forests. They are that good.'' Laura said.

''Then i think that's why you need to remain here.'' Drew said.

Laura knew he was right but she didn't know if she could do that judging by the captive she had in the building. She didn't want to leave Liyah all alone for fear of her escaping. Laura was in a dilemma now. Staying with Drew and his pack was guaranteed to keep her safe from Alpha Jed and his son. But on the other hand, Liyah could escape and when she did, Laura had no doubt that she would tell Alpha Jed all about everything that had happened and soon, a manhunt for her would begin.

''The choice is yours Laura. I'm just giving you your options.'' Drew said.

His back shone under the stars and yet again, Laura felt a strong pull towards him she had never felt before.

''I'll stay here.'' Laura said.

Her safety was much more important to her. She needed to be among people who would ensure that she was kept safe from all harm. Walking and doing things alone wasn't a wise thing to do in this situation and she'd be a fool to do that.

As it stood, Alpha Jed and his son were after her life and any moment they laid their eyes on her, she knew she'd be dead. They had attempted to rape her before and this time around, they would carry out their plan and even do more of that to her.

''Are you sure Laura?'' Drew asked.

''I'm sure.'' Laura said.

''Okay. You're welcome.'' he smiled.

Laura chuckled, climbing the rock to sit beside him. In his presence, she felt safe and secured with him. It was like nothing would ever touch her. That was what she wanted to be feeling everyday of her life and she knew she had made the right decision.

''So what did you want to tell me?'' Drew asked.

Laura sifted through her thoughts, deciding on how best to arrange her thoughts into something he could understand.

Laura began with her arrival at the ball and everything that led to her kidnapping Liyah. From the look on Drew's face, Laura had a feeling that the Alpha Wolf wasn't surprised.

''So where is she?'' he asked.

''At the building i said.'' Laura asked.

''Okay.'' Drew said.

''Wait! You aren't surprised?'' Laura asked.

''No, I'm not. You see, just before you left, I knew you would carry out a revenge mission. The thing is, i didn't know how or when you would carry it out but i just knew that it would be soon and it turns out that i was right after all.'' Drew said.

''I see. You're really observant i must say.'' Laura said.

''Of course, that's what makes me the Alpha of this pack. If I'm not observant, I could easily miss simple details that occur in my pack.'' he said.

''That makes you very smart.'' Laura said.

''Thanks for the compliment.'' he grinned.

They stayed in comfortable silence for a while, each with their own thoughts. Laura's mind was on Liyah and what she might do if no one was there to look over her. Drew on the other hand was thinking about the impending battle that was sure to begin as soon as Alpha Jed and his son knew where Laura was.

At that moment, he was ready to fight everyone tooth and nail in ensuring that Laura was safe. Right from the very moment he had rescued her from the forest, he knew she was an Alpha wolf but it seemed Alpha Jed and his son had done everything to make her forget who she was. He saw the determination in her eyes and even with her sitting beside him, he could actually feel it.

''Do you think i should bring her here?'' Laura asked.

''I don't think that's wise.'' Drew said.

''I know but I just can't let her go. I need to hold onto her so that my stepfather and his son would no that i'm not bluffing when it comes to my revenge mission.'' Laura said.

''Laura, i think you should let her go.'' Drew said.

''What? After all they've done to me?'' she seethed.

''Look. Your real battle isn't with them, it's with Alpha Jed and his son. Holding onto her would never bring them to you. In fact, you'd be surprised that they'll rather have her die in your hands than in theirs. Think Laura and don't be blinded by your hate towards them.'' Drew said.

Laura remained quiet for a long time, thinking about his words. She knew he was right but she just couldn't fathom releasing a girl that was associated with her pain.

''This is so hard.'' Laura said.

''It isn't Laura, you just have to be logical here. Your real target is Alpha Jed and his son and not Liyah. Free the girl and focus your energy on your real enemies.'' Drew said.

''So i shouldn't go back to the building?'' Laura asked.

''No. Let her go.'' Drew said.

''What if she reports everything to Alpha Jed?'' she asked.

''Then we would be ready for them. You can trust me on that.'' Drew said.

Laura sighed because she knew he was right. Chasing after something that wasn't in her plans was bound to make her make mistakes that much she knew. It was best she forgot about Liyah and focused on Alpha Jed and his son, that was the only way victory could be made.
