Another Little Girl

"I'm telling you! The Nightseeker is real!" A short, thin boy shouted. "Ha! Give me proof and then I'll believe you." The tall one said, pushing the other one away. "Stop! Leave him alone!" I say, standing up from the bench I was sitting on. "Oh really? And who are you to say that? Oh! I already know the answer. You're just another little girl. Do us all a favor and go to your wittle mommy. I know you're missing her!" He said in a baby-ish voice. Before I could respond, he held his head high, and stalked away. Vernin Trester. The biggest bully in our entire school. I think he gets pleasure by suppressing other children. The other boy was trembling, still standing in the place he stood before. "Are you okay?" I asked him. "Yeah. Nobody has ever had the guts to stand up to that boy before."

"Well, you've never met me before! What's your name?"

"Tyler. Tyler Felicis. What's your name?"

"Rose Theodore. Nice to meet you." I tell him. "Wait. Your father is Theodore? Huh. I think my father works with your father. He's trying to find the Nightseeker. Isn't he?" My eyes light up.

My father is trying to find the Nightseeker? The greatest dragon ever! "My father doesn't tell me much about his job, or what he is doing. Who is your father anyway?" I ask him, curious.

"Umm... Can we go in private? I don't think it's the best thing to be talking about, out here." I nod. Is his father that mysterious? Once we know everyone is out of earshot, Tyler starts talking.

"My father is a dragon, but my mother is a human." He sucks in a deep breath after. "So does that mean... You're a halfer? Wow... That is so cool!"

"Whereas, a halfer that doesn't have powers is not that cool. Is it?" Tyler said, looking down sadly. Halfers have the ability to shapeshift, in this case, from human to dragon and vice versa.

"Your powers haven't sprouted yet? How old are you?"

"Twelve. My father thinks... he thinks I'm a fraud." He whispers the last part, and I look away. I don't know my father really well, he's always traveling, but I know he will never call me a fraud.

"I'm... sorry." I tell him, not knowing what else to say.

"Dad..." The dragon turns, but he shakes his head and turns away, and starts walking. "Wait! Just listen to me. I met Theodore's daughter today, Rose." The dragon straightens, and looks back. "Theodore?" He asks, his voice angry, but tired. "Yes. You work with him, don't you?" Tyler asks. "With him? I work against him. He knows me as Frenade- a human-loving dragon. But he doesn't know who I really am." The dragon says, walking away. Tyler is shocked, but doesn't stop him this time.
