Chapter 16: Do Your Job

Elise swiveled on her stool at the bar as the cheers of the gamblers behind her bounced off the walls. The evening had progressed in her favor. Subtle glares at Mako's handsome face and free alcohol made her feel a little spoiled. On top of that, Dmitri and his goons had yet to make an entrance for the main event, allowing her hope to run free like the wind.

"Another night of sitting all alone at my bar, Elise?" the bartender asked with a grin.

She sipped her drink through the straw and set it down.

"Am I boring you, Arman?" she said in return.

"Not at all," the man said. "Your quick glances at that man at Table 12 have provided me with a good amount of entertainment. I take it he fancies you, then?"

Elise bit her lower lip, trying to keep the smile on her face from widening.

"I suppose you could say that," she said.

"And, uh, what does Mr. Morokov think of this?" Arman asked.

Her smile fell to the floor.
