Chapter 17: The Champion and the Challenger

Tuesday, May 8th, 9:18 PM

Mako steeled his nerves as he glared at the back of Dmitri's head while walking toward the captain's table. He couldn't help but allow a light grimace to form on his face. The case of poker chips felt light in his hand, pushing his drive to take all of his primary opponent's money right from under his nose.

Taking a seat at the poker table, Mako glanced at Nikolai, the dealer, who held a slightly nervous expression. Dmitri sat down along with the other guests including the captain.

"Ah, Mr. Ruvic," the captain said. "I was beginning to think you'd lost interest in cards after leaving on the first night."

Mako forced a grin.

"Lose my interest in cards?" he said. "I'd sooner surrender my house."

He felt Dmitri's piercing gaze upon him.

"Or maybe the touch of a woman," Mako said, furthering his point and taking a jab at Dmitri by glancing at him as he spoke.

Dmitri lightly scoffed.
