Chapter 20

Back in the town, Rebecca has just finished a training session at the local martial arts gym and leaves after locking it up for the night.

Hybreed: I always knew you had a fierce side to you.

Startled, Rebecca turns to find Hybreed leaning against the wall of the building.

Rebecca Justice: You know, there is a polite way of saying "hello."

Hybreed: My apologies.

Rebecca Justice: What are you doing here?

Hybreed: Came to apologize for how I abruptedly left your place of work the other day. It was very rude of me.

Rebecca Justice: I won't lie, it's not every day a man suddenly leaves in the middle of a conversation. Must have been an important task to attend to.

Hybreed: You could say that.

Rebecca Justice: Mind if I ask you something? Maybe a little personal?

Hybreed: Do I have a choice to not answer?

Rebecca Justice: It is your free will to not answer. Is your name really Hybreed?

Hybreed pauses a moment and chuckles softly at the question.

Hybreed: I told you once and it is the truth. No, it's not european, it's - it's my birth name that I have had my entire life.

Rebecca Justice: I'm not judging, just never heard of that kind of name is all.

Hybreed nods to her in silence as she bids her farewell, climbs into her car and drives away as Hybreed stands there, not aware of an unmarked car behind him and two agents revealed to be Agent Jonathan Musgrove and Agent Jessica Lockett of H.O.U.S.E. standing by the car as Hybreed turns around to face them.

Agent Jonathan Musgrove: I would ask, but, that whole conversation answered my question.

Hybreed: Not interested.

Agent Jessica Lockett: He reads minds too.

Hybreed: I can do more than read minds especially to those I see as a threat.

Agent Jonathan Musgrove: We're not a threat, Hybreed. In fact, we are the good guys trying to do the right thing like you.

Hybreed: I know why you two are here and I have an entire village that needs me, so if you'll excuse me.

Agent Jessica Lockett: The fate of the world is at stake here and it needs you.

Hybreed: The world needs me? Or it needs me to save them just so it can turn it's back on me and my family?

Agent Jessica Lockett: We can help with that if you help us with this. Hekate has already killed thirty of our agents in the span of three days and she isn't done.

Agent Jonathan Musgrove: We know she is on a vengeful quest to destroy the world, but we want to know why.

Hybreed stands there as he has another vision of that night.

Hybreed: Sorry. You have the wrong person.

Agent Jessica Lockett: What can we do to convince you?

Hybreed: Nothing. I'm sorry agents, but I can't help you. Perhaps someone- .

Agent Jonathan Musgrove: There is no one else.

Monroe has gone off radar and we can't contact him. You are the next one we were able to find. This opportunity may never come again.

Hybreed pauses a moment as he closes his eyes to think then looks at the two agents, anxiously waiting for his final answer. He lets out a long sigh, not knowing what to do while sweat falls down his face like a faucet.

Hybreed: If I agree to this, we do things my way. It's me she wants and it's me she wants to kill.

Agent Jonathan Musgrove: Fair enough.

Suddenly, two black vehicles pull up and the men inside open fire at the three of them! Musgrove and Lockett draw their guns and return fire as Hybreed jumps over the car and easily takes down two of the men while Musgrove shoots and kills one of the attackers. Hybreed discovers that these men are cursed by Hekate and is able to block and kick another attacker away while a second attacker is killed by Lockett. The remaining attackers are gunned down by the two agents as Hybreed is able to kill the final one with a swift throat slash.

Returning to the village, Hybreed goes to Lyke's to find Jasper still asleep but alive.

Lyke: His condition is getting worse, and I don't have the proper medication to treat him.

Hybreed: How bad is it?

Lyke: Bad enough that if we don't get him what he needs, he will die in the next three hours. He may not make it through the night. I contacted a colleague over at the university. He may be able to help us.
