Chapter Fifty-One

Sarah stood at the base of the tree staring up the thing in awe, wondering just how high the tree went up. From this close-up, it was impossible to see the top of the tree, not with all the branches getting in the way. The tree branches were baren of leaves and had a gray tinge that made the Tree of Life seem lifeless.

Not far to her right, stairs were leading up the tree in a spiral around it, with a crowd of people standing in line waiting for their turn to ascend the massive tree. The line of people went back almost a mile with guards patrolling the area to keep the peace. A few times just since she had arrived, people were pushing and shoving each other, claiming someone cut them in line. When Sarah tried to get in the back of the line with the rest of the people, Peter grabbed her arm and pulled her away, saying," We don't stand in lines like the others." Others, meaning people without powers, she guessed.
