Jameson Rook watched the love of his life, Nikki Heat, stride through the steaming jungles of the Yucatan Peninsula. Rook smiled appreciatively at her long, muscular legs that had been so often wrapped around his waist in the throes of passion. He sighed at the sight of her tight shorts covering her perfect ass. So firm, so taut, so erotic. Sweat had plastered her tee shirt to her body, revealing her firm, succulent breasts. Her taut nipples poked through the thin material.

Jameson himself drifted through the jungle like a wisp of smoke, a tribute to the many years he'd spent facing death in Chechnya, Kashmir, Congo and the other war torn spots around the planet. No matter what happened or who they faced, Rook knew he'd be able to protect Nikki. He was a master of many…

"Castle! What are you doing? You make me look like some kind of bimbo and you come off like some action hero."

Rick smiled up at Kate. "I'm writing a story based on one of our old cases. And to begin with, that's Nikki not you. And for this book, I think Jameson should be a little more proactive. More macho. I mean the guy has spent lots of time in war zones, you remember."

Kate lifted an eyebrow skeptically. "Everyone knows that Nikki is really Kate. And if you remembered what you wrote before about Rook, he spends most of his time backstage with Bono at some charity event."

"You think you can do better?" he challenged.

She just smiled.

Detective Nikki Heat moved through the jungle, carefully moving from one patch of shade to the other. Her eyes moved all of the time, not neglecting to look up and behind her. Her well-worn Glock 17 was snug against her waist and her M4 carbine hung from the assault sling she'd rigged. Her tiger stripe fatigues blended perfectly with her surroundings. She smiled coldly. Anyone who got in her way would pay dearly for what they'd done.

She whirled around as something crashed in the jungle behind her. Her Glock appearing in her hand with lightning speed. She frowned. Rook had tripped over a vine and fallen. Again. "Rook! Can you watch where you're going?"

"Couldn't we have taken a helicopter?" The reporter whined. "Something with air conditioning and a bar?

"Stop." Rick said. "You call that writing? Nikki may be tough, but she's all woman. She's sexy and hot as well as tough and savvy. I almost expect your version of her to ask for more steroids and say, "Ah'll be bahk."

"Nikki is the one who carries a gun. And who drives. Rook is the guy who wandered into a bullet meant for Nikki."

"Hey! If I had been a split second faster, I would have been hit by that bullet."

She nodded. "In real life, yes. And that's one of the many reasons I love you. But you wrote Nikki and Rook and what you're doing here is not the Nikki and Rook that your audience, including me, wants and expects."

"Well, let me show you something I've been working on in my head."

The two adventurers stood at the long lost entrance to the Temple of Tuman Kru. It was choked with jungle growth, and the pillars that had once held up the roof were leaning drunkenly, in danger of collapsing at any moment. Rook stepped confidently forward.

"Be careful, Rook. I couldn't stand to lose you." Nikki said with a tear in her voice.

Rook smiled a devil may care smile. "I'm ten feet tall and bullet proof, sweetheart. Now follow me and step exactly where I do."

Nikki followed the roguish and ruggedly handsome reporter, knowing she'd follow him anywhere.

Rook strode confidently to the altar where the emerald encrusted golden statue stood. "These things are always booby trapped, but the safety should he…There." Rook pushed a small protrusion and easily lifted the priceless statue.

"You can't be serious." Kate said giggling. "That sounds more like a Saturday morning cartoon than anything else. Shouldn't Rook be going in with a couple of girls and big dog?"

"Again, you could do better?"

"In my sleep. Although the first paragraph isn't bad."

The two adventurers stood at the long lost entrance to the Temple of Tuman Kru. It was choked with jungle growth, and the pillars that had once held up the roof were leaning drunkenly, in danger of collapsing at any moment. Nikki stepped confidently forward. "Rook, you should stay here." She remembered her lover's fragile ego. "In case I need back up."

Rook gulped. "Sure thing Nikki. Are you sure there isn't a bar nearby? I could use a cold Dos Equis or twelve. And be careful."

Heat's years of training kicked in. She spotted where the triggers for the many booby traps were and easily walked to the altar without triggering any. The altar would be harder, but she hadn't spent all of those hours with the NYPD Bomb Squad learning about booby traps for nothing. She easily disarmed the last booby trap and lifted up the priceless jewel encrusted gold statue.

"Nothing to it." She muttered.

"You're remarkable." Rook said in awe.

"You do remember that Rook and Nikki are partners. He isn't just there for comic relief, you know."

Kate shrugged. "Nikki is the hero of the series, remember? And Rook doesn't have her training and experience. I'm sure if they're confronted with a horde of time traveling, cyborg zombie, genetically modified giant penguins, Rook will come into his own."

"Wait, let me write that down. I'll call it Antarctic Heat. Great idea. I'm glad I thought of it."

Kate just rolled her eyes.

"Now, Missy, let me show you what real writing is like. The confrontation!

Out of the jungle burst two dozen heavily armed insurgents! Rook looked them over and instantly decided they were the soldiers of El Sinverguenza, the Shameless One. The most dreaded rebel in all of Latin America. The rebels had them covered with their AK 47s. Rook decided he couldn't risk Nikki's life. "Put down your weapons, Nikki. Let me handle this."

"Rook, I can take them." Nikki whispered.

"I have a cunning plan." Rook said confidently.

Nikki unwillingly put down her weapons.

Out of the jungle came a tall willowy figure. Rook instantly knew that all of the tiny bits of intelligence he had put together over the years was correct. It wasn't El Sinverguenza, it was La Sinverguenza. The most feared guerilla in South America was a woman!

"So, you are the famous Jameson Rook?" Said the beautiful woman.

By way of reply, Rook leaned over and kissed her lightly on the cheek. She sighed and smiled at him. "Go on your way, yanqui. I could not kill such a man or the woman who has captured his heart."

"Oh my god!" Kate cried. "You can't be serious. If you are, your ego is approaching infinity. All Rook has to do is kiss her on the cheek?"

"It worked with you." Rick said smugly.

"Let me show you how it's done, Writer Boy."

Out of the jungle burst two dozen heavily armed insurgents! Heat looked them over and instantly decided they were the soldiers of El Sinverguenza, the Shameless One. The most dreaded rebel in all of Latin America. The rebels had them covered with their AK 47s.

"Just stay calm, Rook." Nikki said, hoping he could hear her over the sound of the reporter voiding his bladder and bowels.

Nikki did the only thing she could do in this situation. She showed them her boobs. The men stood mesmerized as Nikki walked past them, hauling Rook with her. Several days later a patrol of Federales found the men, still entranced and grinning widely.

"You call me egotistical? What do you call that?"

"You don't like my boobs?" Kate said softly, in a tone that guaranteed that Rick would be seeing no boobs if he answered no.

"They're magical." Rick said quickly. "But…"

Relaxing in a bar in Cancun, sipping mojitos, Jameson Rook looked across at Nikki Heat. One thing he knew, he would love her like he had loved no one else. Always.

Kate smiled at Rick and began typing on the laptop.
