Amy's Defense

Ivy stands in the ambulance bay with Callie, Owen and soon joined by Meredith and Maggie, "Hey, how was the dinner last night?"

"Don't ask," the sisters say together.

"Yeah, that's what I thought," Ivy mumbles, before looking at Callie, "Whats wrong with you?"

"Uh, I was-I was up all night," Callie lifts her head up.

Meredith nods, "Me too."

Callie crosses her arms, "Ah, Sofias been acting out, asking questions about me and Arizona, and I don't know what to tell her or how to tell her, so I'm just not sleeping. I'm miserable. Why didn't you sleep?"

"Oh, you don't want to know."

Ivy turns to her, "Whats going on? Is Derek being an ass again?"

She shakes her head, "Derek and I were up having sex all night."

"Can the ambulance run me over please? The last thing I want to be thinking about is my brother having sex," Ivy groans.

The ambulance finally gets there and Ivy rushes to open the doors and is greeted by the paramedic, "69 year old male, jumped two stories from a burning building. Shocky, B.P.s 95 over 60 with a rate in the 120s. G.C.S. 14 in the field."

They wheel him out, holding onto a woman, "Hattie..."

"Why are we looking at two patients on one gurney?" Ivy asks.

"Shes dead," Nicole tells us.

"What?"

"We couldn't find a pulse. And we tried to pull her off, but the husband just held on. He was agitated. He wouldn't let her go. So we had to stop cause we were afraid we were gonna hurt him," Nicole explains.

Amelia finds them as they're walking in, "Whatve we got-oh, wow."

Nicole continues, "Witnesses said he carried his wife out the window and jumped to escape the fire. We think he was trying to break her fall."

Ivy nods, "Lets get him into trauma one."

Meredith tells everyone as they move the patient off the gurney, "His skin is mottled and cyanotic. We have to get her off of him."

"Sir, you have to let her go. We have to move her to help you," Owen tells him as the patient repeats no, over and over.

"Sir, what is your name?" Ivy asks.

"Norris. I-is she...?"

"You don't have to worry about that right now, sir-" Owen starts.

Ivy interrupts him, "No, he does, actually, of course he does. Norris, what is your wife's name?"

Norris tries again, "Is she...? Harriet. Hattie," he clutches her close to him.

"Norris. Norris, it's time to let Hattie go. Shes gone," Ivy tells him.

He asks, "Gone? What do you mean gone?"

Ivy doesn't hide it, "Norris, she died. She's gone. I'm sorry. You did everything you could. You helped her through the hardest part. You held her, you protected her, and she died in your arms. And I have no doubt that she couldn't think of a better way."

Maggie adds, "Shes no longer in any pain, Norris, but you are, and she wouldn't want you to be. You have to let her go now so we can help you, okay?"

Norris starts sobbing, "Shes mine. I can't."

Ivy gets his attention, "Norris. Norris, I'm so sorry. It's time. Let us help you."

He slowly releases her as they roll her off of him as Ivy whispers to Owen, "I'll pronounce."

"Hattie...honey...honey..."

Ivy blocks everyone else out as she does an ultrasound to check on Hattie, "Quiet. Quiet!" She hears it, "I got a pulse. Barely palpable, but it's there. Trauma two. Pierce, Shepherd, you're with me. Hunt, you got him?"

"Good tube placement. Yeah, the hemopneumothorax is bigger. Edwards, prep for a chest tube," Maggie tells her.

"Before you do that, Edwards, can you check with C.T. again and see when they can take us?" Amelia asks.

Ivy looks at her sister, "Shes bleeding into her lung."

Amelia nods, "I know, but I felt a depressed temporal bone fracture, and she has spinal fluid coming out of her ear. I need a C.T. to confirm."

April comes in, "I'm heading up to radiology. Is anyone free to update the family?"

Amelia nods, before heading out to update the family.

A few moments later, Ivy hears some shouting and rushes out, "-No! I want another doctor!"

Ivy steps forward, "Ma'am, I need you to calm down and stop-"

"She cannot touch my mother. She's a drug addict. I can't have her operate on my parents," the woman says.

"If you do not calm down I will have to ask you to le-" Ivy tries again.

"I met her in narcotics anonymous. She was hooked on oxy. She overdosed with her boyfriend and woke up with him dead in bed with her. I-"

"You need to stop talking. You broke the biggest rule of AA and if you do not calm down right now or step outside, you will be killing patients because doctors aren't able to focus on their work. Including your mother, who I am supposed to be helping right now. Dr. Hunt will fill you in on your parents but right now, I need you to take a step out," Ivy stops her.

Hunt escorts the woman away as Derek comes up, "I got this Hunt," then walks back to Hattie as Amelia and Ivy are left.

Doctors and patients watch Amelia before Ivy says, "Get back to work. Now!" And guides Amelia out of the eyes.

Owen finds Ivy scrubbing out of a surgery, "Ivy, what am I looking at?"

She knows what he's actually meaning, "The patient is a 30 year old woman with-"

"Ivy. Is what Sarah said true? Is she a drug addict? Did she kill her boy-"

Ivy slams her hands down on the sink, "Let me get one thing clear. She did not kill her boyfriend. He overdosed with her. She went through hell. She's in recovery. Just like Webber. Amelia is where she needs to be. She goes to meetings and talks to me when she needs to."

Owen sighs, "Okay. Derek didn't reassure me that she should be head of the department."

That caused her to shake her head, "You're gonna take Derek's advice? He's jealous. He wants that position back and will do anything to get it. Including through his little sister under the bus. Amy is where she should be. And if I'm wrong, you can fire me."

"Ivy, I don't think-"

"No. If I'm wrong and she somehow messes up because of her sobriety, you can fire me and I'll become a stay at home mom. Hell, if I'm wrong, I'll call my mom and apologize for what I said at my wedding. That is how sure I am that Amelia is where she should be. Trust me, Owen," Ivy pleads.
