Using Them

Ivy puts Christopher in his carseat as Jackson does the same with Alexus, "Did you hear all the rumors going- yes Chris, I see the dog-around about Nathan and Owen? It's crazy."

He nods, "I know. I even heard one that- no Allie, wait until I buckle you in- said the fight was over April."

"No, she would tell us. Well, she'd tell me," Ivy smiles, sitting in the passenger seat.

"I guess you're right. I wonder what the actual problem is then. Hunt tell you anything?"

She shakes her head, "No, just that he hates him. Owen knows me well enough to know that I can't just hate someone without getting to know them, so he knows that I'm being civil with him. Oh, did I tell-"

"Snow!" The twins shout out.

Ivy and Jackson look out the windshield, "Thats not snow, babies."

Jackson sighs, "Nope. That's ash."

"And I thought I could have a relaxing day in the E.R."

Bailey stands on the stairs, addressing the surgeons, "Four crews of firefighters were trapped battling wildfires east of town. We have at least 40 injuries en route. I said we would take all of them.:

Jackson speaks up, "40? We're gonna hit capacity, and-"

"We will take all of them. We're looking at second, third, and fourth degree burns, smoke inhalation, and some traumas. All non-critical...patients, um...are being transferred to Seattle Pres and Tacoma," she moves up the stairs, "This entire hospital is now a burn treatment center. If you are a little rusty...plastics will be available for consult, but they will be in high demand and cannot be everywhere. If you need them...residents, stay with your assigned attendings unless needed in the burn unit or in the pit. Uh, everyone who is on call has been called in. This is an all hands on deck situation. Triage in the E.R. send the critical patients to the burn unit or the O.R. Dr. Avery is your point person on this, okay? Uh, let's see..then thats..." She starts looking through her book before seeing Webber gesturing to Ivy, "Dr. Shepherd, can you tell us anything else?"

Ivy nods, taking Baileys place, "I'm gonna make this fast because we have lives to save. Being burned alive is horrible and psychologically taxing. Psych consults are here and ready. If you see a patient who needs them, you call them in. They are our brothers and sisters, they save lives just like us."

"Uh, question. Isn't it our jobs to save them, surgically, not worry about them mentally?" An intern asks.

"Quick crash course on me. A couple years ago, I was in a plane crash with a few other doctors from this hospital. While they suffered a range of injuries, some losing their lives, I woke to being burned alive. I have second degree burns on my arm and third degree on my leg, along with so much nerve damage that the fact I have a leg still is lucky. They are prepared for this kind of thing, but reality is so much worse. They will be confused and hurt. You aren't just surgeons, you are the people saving their lives, the people they are trusting. You need to save them in every way. Call for help. Don't be a hero. Now, let's get to work," Ivy shoos them off.

As she starts heading towards the pit, Riggs catches up to her, "So, you were in a plane crash?"

Ivy nods, "Yeah, with 6 other doctors. It's not a story for now, but maybe a later time."

Riggs nudges her, "I'd love to hear it sometime. Maybe over drinks?"

Before Ivy could answer, Meredith calls out, "Ivy!" And drags her away, "You know that Owen hates him, right?"

"Yes, Meredith. I do. But my loyalty to Owen doesn't control my entire life. Owen knows that I'm not gonna just blindly hate Riggs and he understands that I can't force myself to," Ivy tells her sister in law.

"Okay. Fine. Are you free this weekend? I need some new faces at the house and the kids miss you and the twins," Meredith asks.

"Of course. The twins miss them too. Does Saturday work?"

Meredith nods, "Yes. I will buy some nonalcoholic drinks before you come over."

Ivy laughs, "I appreciate it."

She spots Jackson and quickly grabs a trauma gown before saying, "I'll jump on triage and the most acute injuries."

Jackson tries to talk to her as they head to the elevator, "Ivy-"

"You take any compromised airways," Ivy tells him.

"Ivy, can we talk about what you said to everyone? Are you okay? Is this-" Jackson tries to say.

"Now is not the time to worry. It's sweet of you to, but my E.R. is about to be jam-packed. We don't have time for this," Ivy shuts it down.

He nods, "Okay. But we will talk later?"

Ivy kisses him, "Yes. Now let's worry about the patients instead of me."

They walk out onto the roof and see choppers coming in.

"Shepherd-Avery, how are we doing?" Bailey asks her.

"Stretched. I need somebody to take a look at the guy in bed four!" She calls out.

Jackson and Ivy walk up to Bailey, "Chief, the burn unit is full, and I need beds down here."

Ivy shakes her head, "We can't take any more. We're already at capacity."

"I have patients with extensive burns that are on gurneys in the hallway," Jackson adds.

"Well, we need to start diverting to other hospitals," Ivy tells her.

Bailey shakes her head, "No, no. We're not doing that."

Jackson gestures, "Well, I need to know what we are doing, please."

Webber asks, "Do I need to notify Seattle Pres?"

"Chief!" Ivy demands as Bailey doesn't respond.

"I said we're not turning firefighters away. You said it, Shepherd, they're our brothers and sisters. Come with me," she gestures to Jackson who follows her.

Ivy walks over to Owen, "Hunt? Owen?"

"Hmm?" He looks over to her.

"Your mom's boyfriend- he's a firefighter, right?" Ivy asks.

Owen nods, "Yeah. Why?"

She tells him, "Because she's here-your mom."

"Cross, take over," he tells the intern before following Ivy over to her, "Mom?"

"Owen! John was working the fire. They said they brought him here. Have you seen him?" She asks.
