BAINE'S HAVOC

On the hill of Luki, at the end of the multi coloured asphalt shingle bungalows overlooking the yawning lake lies at the four bed roomed Cape Cod where the Baines family survives. Mr. and Mrs. Baines master bedroom on the right, the boys and Aimine’s room on the right, in the master bedroom, his father has a USB port threatening to beat the hell out of him if he can’t say where the sister’s birthday cake disappeared to.

The dog Matt on sensing the tension the family woke up to came in through the house to ease whatever situation they were in, he was man's best friend after all and now was the time to prove that he didn’t deserve to be tied to the chain all day in his kennel, forgetting all the mud it was carrying, Matt excitedly walked into the house running hoping to calm his owner, he could sense the anger in his voice as he spoke to the young master. Ayden spotted Matt running through the house the dirtiest two pairs of feet he had seen, her mum wasn’t going to spare him for forgetting to Chain him up early in the morning, the drama this family woke up to couldn’t have made him to remember. He tried to grab it by the collar but it he was not being easy that morning, he easily squeezed himself from the thin boy with such might that he didn’t see where he was going to fall.

His mother coming with dinner plates from the kitchen on their way to the cupboard threw all the plates in the air and ran to catch his boy just in time before he hit himself to the ground, No sooner had he caught the boy than all the plates fell to the ground with a heavy cluttering sound each breaking into tiny pieces. Matt stopped at the entrance of Asaph's bedroom, he had the sound first but on looking behind him, he noticed the tiny footsteps he left behind before seeing the broken pieces of the plates and the rage in Dayne’s eyes. He may be Man's best friend but definitely not a woman's best friend or even a friend at the moment. He did not wait to be shouted at, he cooed in apology at Dayne and immediately sprinted to his Kennel before hell broke loose on him too.

“For the last time Adson, where did you hide the cake?” Mr. Baines asks his calm looking second born un bothered by the events in the living room. He still replies with the same answer. “I ate the whole cake dad”. His father did not wish to whip his son on his sister’s birthday but the boy left him no choice. Today morning Aimine woke to her worst nightmare when her strawberry vanilla cake freshly baked last night by her mum for her third birthday went missing today morning. She hasn’t stopped sobbing since then.

Having a habit of hiding things to trick people made Adson the first suspect when the cake was nowhere to be found. There was this one time when he hid the plumber’s shoes for two hours and till the plumber gave up and was willing to walk home bare foot. Today the Baines family thought this was a different plank only for Adson to admit that he ate the whole cake in the middle of the night which no one was willing to believe, eating all that cake would give him a sugar rush not to mention a very painful stomachache.

Mrs. Baines was now fruitlessly comforting the sobbing Aimine, Ayden had long stood up and simply looked on at the morning drama and didn’t know where to start from; he stood in the corridor and stared between his father and troublesome brother in the bedroom and his mother in the living room. “Stop all of you”, he shouted in time to save his brother from the first lash. “Am sure there’s a way we can settle this matter without adding another wailing in the house or more broken stuff. It’s already a mess in here and by the time Adson is done crying, the whole day will be a mess already. If Adson really ate the cake by himself, which is indeed astonishing, beating him won’t bring it back. Its far better if we look for more solutions than trouble” the ten year old Ayden reasons, looking from his dad in the bedroom to his mom in the living area. Their father puts the wire down and Adson thanks the lord for surviving that lash today, later he will make it up to his brother. “What do you have in mind Ayden?” his mother asks relieved that Aimine is now quiet too. “I have a better plan that will make Adson talk, let’s get ready and go”. The family cleaned up the mess in the living room Adson went and chained up Matt and thanked it for saving the day and convinced it that his mum was not so mad at him.

As soon as everyone is settled in their father’s land cruiser that’s when Ayden suggests that since Adson got the black card from the manager at Arena mall, why not use it to buy everything that everyone wants from there and a cake ten times bigger than the one their mum had baked last night, though it may not be rich in mother’s love, it would be bought with brother care. In return Adson gets to return his robot toy and hand back the card to the mall manager claiming that he is done using it. The whole family agrees with Ayden’s idea except for Adson of course. That’s not how he’s been planning to use his black valueless card let alone hand it back. He pleads with his father not to drive and apologizes for stealing the cake claiming he didn’t know what came over him but all fall on stone as the car leaves the drive way.

“Dad, can we at least bypass the hospital before we go to the mall” Adson pleads from the behind seat, Mr. Baines takes one look at his son and swallows his response and drives. “Are you okay Adson?” His mom inquiries from the co driver’s seat. Colour has drained from his eyes and his skin is turning to purple. Few minutes later, Adson is inside the emergency room at St. Mark’s hospital, his father is at the desk filling in the forms while his mother is worried sick on the chair, curiosity is eating the two siblings watching their brother from the window as the doctors run different tests on him. “I hate my birthday” Aimine says to Ayden.
