Before I know it, we pull up to Jade Landing, Centerburg’s only gated community. I was briefly friends with someone in high school who lived in this neighborhood, but I’d never been in before.


They have a guardhouse and cameras checking license plates. 


I put my phone down and see that Donovan is on his phone, mouth tugged down into a frown. I guess he isn’t on Sparkleaf.


“Everything okay?” I ask, noting how his brow is furrowed just like when he learned we’d be going to different universities.
