Chapter 29: Time To Commit

I find myself frozen in place. My heart stops in my chest like someone slammed shut a music box.

“Rivkah, I…” I don’t even know how to finish this sentence.

She stares at me like a cat before it pounces on a mouse.

“Let me make one thing crystal clear, I don’t particularly get along with Donovan, I don’t understand him, but I do respect him.” Rivkah enters my space, her eyes flashing yellow.

“And because I respect him, I feel obligated to tell him that you don’t actually like him, you’re just using him as a meal ticket so you can be set for life.” The blonde shifter’s fangs lengthen a bit and for a moment I’m wondering if she wants to fight me in the women’s bathroom of my own office.

Then my brain catches up to what she says.

“What?! No! I do like Donovan, and he’s the one who keeps telling me about his plans for the future. I’m still…figuring it out!” My answer comes out like word vomit, and my stomach flip-flops like I might puke my lunch across Rivkah’s designer flats.
