What Am I?

Back in the village where Haren had caught Edýia as soon as she heard his words. Edýia halted her steps, and she realised that he was right. Her entire life, she had never had a choice. Her brothers always decided for her what she wanted never mattered to them. Even though Dakran was more understanding, Haren was a tyrant. He never budged. No matter how much she pleaded or begged. It was his way or nothing at all.

Edýia clenched her fists tightly, her anger simmered at that point, and she felt the need to let it out somehow.

Her vision suddenly turned white, and her fists began burning with a white flame.

Edýian turned around on her heels and pointed her hands at Haren, and before he even realised what had happened, the flames hit him, and he flew in the air, crashing on the ground with a loud thud.

The people around gasped, and the gasps quickly turned into screams at the sight of the girl whose body was burning in a white flame as she closed the distance between her and Haren.

" Shit!" Haren cursed as he pushed himself off the ground in a swift move and pulled a golden chain with a blue pendant out of his pocket, and closed the distance between him and Edýia. Before he could even reach her, Edýia hit him again with a series of white fireballs, and Haren crashed to the ground again.

He stood up once more, tightly clutching the pendant, and this time, he charged toward her with more determination. Despite

the fact that Edýia kept throwing fire at him, he dodged them one by one and finally closed the distance between them and placed the pendant around her neck.

Edýia incandescent white flames spent, and she fell on the ground. The screaming slowly faded. Haren looked around, a little worried. Now, he had witnesses to deal with, and he didn't want to spill innocent blood.

Edýia opened her eyes " You took the pendant off. You know you have to wear it at all times!" he scolded when she opened her eyes.

" Vile creature! Monster!" one woman shouted as she approached them with her axe ready to strike.

Haren pulled his sword in one swift movement and pointed at the woman's neck " Move one finger, and I'll show a vile creature, a lot scarier than this one!" he smirked at the woman, tipping his chin towards Edýia. The woman wryly chuckled " Leave and never return. You're not welcome here!" she said as she turned around and left.

" Oh, because you gave us such a warm welcome when we arrived!" he mocked, and the woman turned on her heels to look at him.

" Leave!" she roared, making Haren flinch and pull Edýia off the ground.

" Now we have to find Dakran and that woman." he calmly stated as he dragged Edýia through the village while the people looked at them, wary of their presence.

" What happened ?" she asked. The only thing she remembered was a white light that blurred her vision and the screaming that she heard as if it was a dream.

" You took this off. That's what happened!" he vaguely replied as he pointed at the pendant around her neck.

" Pelham warned this day would come!" he said to no one in particular as they stepped out of the village and into darkness.

" Huh? I don't understand! What am I, Haren? I know I'm not like you!" she said as she pulled her arm out of his grip and stopped to look at him.

Haren sighed " I don't know what you are, Edýia!" he uttered in surrender " Now come, we need to hurry. There is no point going back and waiting for Dak. He seems to take longer than expected!" he commented as he reprised his steps.

Edýia sat glued to her spot and looked at Haren's figure fading in the darkness surrounding them, unable to understand what she was. She knew she wasn't like them. The mark that she carried on her back told her that much, but she never remembered to have done anything to harm anyone.

" Have I done this before?" she questioned as she finally reprised her steps and followed Haren

" A few times, but you never seemed to remember, and we decided that it is best to keep it that way!" Haren answered as he waited for her to catch up to him

" Oh! Did I hurt someone?" she asked, worried that she had harmed people when it happened.

" No, we made sure of that! Why do you think we kept you away from everyone and everything? We didn't know what triggered you, and we didn't want to take risks!" he explained, his voice resolute, as he continued walking through the darkness.

" I always thought you did it because of the men that kept bothering me!" she replied with a pout. Now she knew the truth about her secluded life.

" It was a good excuse, but nothing lasts forever, and we were just buying time for ourselves!" Haren stopped once again to look at her " We don't know anything about you, and we don't know what you're capable of, and frankly, I'm not willing to find out!" he shared his thoughts with her. His expression was sullen, and he sounded serious.

" You're afraid of me!" she had gathered that much from what he had said up until that point.

" Not of you, of what you can do!" he retorted, sighing. He looked troubled.

" I don't want to hurt anyone!" she absently replied as they continued to walk through the night, as the moon began to rise and shine its gentle rays over the plains.

" I know, but you have no control over your abilities. It's the other way around. Your abilities control you!" he stated with utter conviction as if he had experienced her powers more than once.

" How do I control it then?" she curiously asked, looking at his soured expression.

" You think if I'd know, we would have this talk! I hope the lady that we are looking for will be able to tell us, or Dak has already found out! He should have been back days ago, but I don't know why he hasn't returned yet?" he added, a little worried that Dak hadn't returned.

Now he feared that something had happened to him.
