Alayna smiled down at the triplets and said, “I guess when you’re becoming a mom, you’re mom to all children.”
The sharp sound of a clearing throat sounded across the room. They both looked in Kyler’s direction.
“Doctor,” he said. “Can I see you in the hallway?”
“Excuse me,” he told Alayna. “I’ll be back shortly.”
Searing pain tore through Alayna’s abdomen, and she said, “I think she’s coming soon.”
Alone in the hallway, Kyler traced an imaginary pattern in the floor using his shoe.
“Those girls,” he said. “Your girls are my nieces. Kyler Jacobson was the name I used on Earth, and humans who don’t know my identity.”
Dr. Moses took a glance backward and nodded at Kyler.
“I’m Scion,” he admitted. “I’m Skyla’s brother.”
Dr. Moses stared at nothing in particular, and said, “The Higgins and the Greenbergs are open-minded. They’ll accept the native races…”
“You can tell them,” Scion said, “but don’t make it common knowledge.”
“Of course not,” Dr. Moses replied.
Alayna’s scream reached the hallway, and Dr. Moses whispered, “Excuse me.”
Alayna still clung to the triplets. He gathered them and set them on the couch for the visitors.
“Stay there,” he warned his daughters.
After a brief dilation check on Alayna he said, “You’re ready. She’s coming.”
