Chapter 53 - CatCo

"Kara... I.. I'm so sorry." Lena says, reaching her hand out and placing it on one of Kara's legs, attempting to comfort her girlfriend.

Kara however flinches away from Lena's touch and stands up. This action from Kara does hurt Lena, as it feels like Kara doesn't find comfort in her touch, or just her presence. But Lena doesn't hold it against her girlfriend, she knows that the news of CatCo ceasing to exist at the end of this week, is a major blow to the Kryptonian.

"I... I have to go...." Kara says, tears now running down her face. "Kara.." Lena attempts to call out, standing up as well, following Kara towards her office doors.

Kara stops in place for a second, before then turning her head back around, looking over her shoulder.

"I need to be alone... I'm sorry." Kara says to Lena, and then leaves the office.

Lena's heart hurts for multiple reasons now. Firstly, Lena's heart hurts for Kara, because of course she wants her girlfriend to have the world, and seeing her hurt or upset hurts Lena too. Then secondly, Lena's heart is hurt because of the fact that Kara has said that she needs to be alone, without even trying to talk through it with her. Of course, Lena does understand that there are some people that need to have alone time, just to process things, and that is totally okay. But in those situations, and in those relationships, before that alone time happens, Lena feels it is important for the person who needs that time alone just to have a quick conversation with their partner, just to let them know where their head is at. But Lena just puts this down to something she needs to talk to Kara about later, when she is in a better frame of mind, as Lena isn't going to take personal offense to this, and blow up her relationship with Kara as a result of it. If Lena has learnt anything over the last few weeks, it is that communication while in a relationship is the single most important thing, as without communication, then it ends up with people getting hurt.

Once Kara has left, Lena takes a few moments, just to gather herself, and put herself in a better frame of mind, knowing that she has to get back to work. After a few minutes, Lena takes out her phone, and decides to send Kara a text, as due to their lunch ending abruptly, they didn't actually get to make plans as to when they would be seeing each other again.

I hope you feel better soon. And I am so sorry that this is happening. I know how much you love CatCo.

Can I come over later this evening? After I have finished work.

Lena puts her phone away, not expecting Kara to reply to her anytime soon. For now, Lena just wants to focus on her work, just as a distraction so that she isn't thinking about Kara.

Lena takes a deep breath, and then steps outside her office. To Lena's surprise, both Jess and Sam are already back, sitting at Jess' desk, talking to one another. As Lena looks at her two co-workers, she can tell that they obviously saw Kara's upset look as she left Lena's office.

"Lena!" Sam says, quickly standing up and moving over to the brunette. "Is... is everything okay? We saw Kara leave looking like she was crying."

Lena sighs.

"Kara just got news that the CatCo board have decided that as of Friday, they are going to be dissolving the company." Lena explains.

"Oh." Sam replies, a look of sympathy on her face.

Jess now approaches Lena and Sam.

"Is she concerned about getting another journalist job or something?" Jess asks.

"No." Lena says, shaking her head. "Kara loves working at CatCo. The place really means a lot to her. It was her sort of first real job after all, and it has a lot of sentimental value for her."

Jess nods her head in understanding.

"So, has Kara said what she will do next? Will she try and find another journalism job at a different news organisation or something?" Sam asks.

Lena sighs once more.

"I don't know really. We did talk about it a bit, before she got the news of the board's decision. Kara just said that she isn't sure if she'd want to stay in journalism if CatCo is gone, as it just wouldn't be the same for her." Lena explains, "I did offer her a job here, if she wanted, but she didn't really reply one way or the other to that."

Jess and Sam both nod their heads, looking at Lena, understanding the whole situation is a difficult one.

"What about you Lena? Are you okay?" Sam asks, caringly.

"Me? Why would I not be okay?" Lena asks, confused.

"Lena, your girlfriend, who you love, a lot, is upset. When people are in relationships, there tends to be moments that when your partner is not okay, you end up not being 100% either, just because you feel bad for them." Sam explains.

Lena shoots Sam a caring smile.

"I... I'm a bit upset Kara walked out, saying she needed to be alone. But that is something I plan to talk through with her later." Lena replies, "You are right though. I do feel bad for Kara. It just doesn't sit right with me to see Kara hurt or upset in any capacity. I just really wish I could do something for her."

"I know you do Lena. But all you can do for her now, is when she needs you, be there for her." Sam says.

Lena sighs, already knowing that is really the best she can do, she just wishes there was something more.

"I know, thank you. It's just... frustrating that I can't do anything else." Lena replies.

"Yeah... well it's not like you could buy CatCo or anything." Jess says, jokingly.

Lena suddenly looks at Jess and goes wide-eyed.

"Jess, you are a genius!" Lena exclaims.

"What?" Jess asks, confused.

"That's what I will do! I will buy CatCo!" Lena says, smiling widely. "Lena... I don't think..." Sam begins.

"I have to get on this right now." Lena says, interrupting Sam, not even listening to her best friend speak. "I'm going to have to move quick to buy enough shares to stop the board dissolving the company on Friday." "Lena.." Sam attempts again.

"Right... yes..." Lena says, still not hearing Sam, nodding her head. "I need to make some calls."

Lena then turns back around and walks into her office, leaving Jess and Sam behind. Jess and Sam then both shoot each other concerning looks, knowing that while Lena buying CatCo would be a wonderful thing for her to do for Kara, it could also cause many issues. Then at the same time, it is not a good financial decision.

"Can you give Lena and I a moment. I just... have to talk to her about this." Sam says to Jess.

"Of course." Jess replies, nodding her head. "I can make myself busy, catching up on arranging Lena's schedule out here."

"Okay. Thank you." Sam says, before then heading into Lena's office.

As soon as Sam steps into Lena's office, she sees that her friend has already taken her seat at her desk, and is typing away at her computer, already getting to work on buying CatCo.

"Lena..." Sam says, once more trying to get the youngest Luthor's attention.

Thankfully, this time, Lena looks up at Sam, a big smile on her face. Sam hates that Lena has that smile, and is clearly so happy with this decision, as she knows that she might just take it away with what she needs to talk to her friend about.
