I flopped back down on the couch as soon as the last kid arrived. I felt bad that I wasn’t as engaged as usual, but I was struggling to keep motivation up for most everything. 


I watched as they played around with legos on the floor. Every drop-off with Michael left me feeling devastated, and having Isabella here didn't help. 


"Are you sure you’re okay?" Liz asked for the eighth time. "I can stay, Phil will understand…"


"No, no, you don’t need to stay. You shouldn’t have to suffer because Michael turned out to be a jerk. Go on your date." I gave her a joyless smile. 


She looked at me like I was a wounded puppy she was leaving at the pound. Liz came over and kissed my forehead before saying goodbye and heading off to meet Phil. 


Thinking about her relationship made things a little worse for me but I wasn’t about to say that to her and make her feel bad for being happy. She deserved someone to be looking out for her that way.
