It felt a little strange, going to Camilla’s mother for help. I had to keep reminding myself she wasn’t just Camilla’s mother, she was my boss. I was coming to her because she was one of the leaders of the Deverioux family.

I knocked on the door with one hand and gently squeezed Isabella’s hand with the other. I tried not to think about what Camilla would think about this. She was already upset with me, but I had to do this for her protection, and Liz’s.

The door opened and Sara stood there, looking as if I had interrupted some kind of intense workout. She was strapped in black spandex material, her hair was up but falling out in places and sticking to her head from the sweat.

"Michael? What’s going on? I wasn’t expecting you," she said. Then she smiled down at Isabella. "And how are you, sweetheart?"
