The place was almost empty of other patients, which I found surprising. It was eerie and haunting. It was also darker than I expected. I thought there would be more lights on, but I supposed not drawing unwanted attention was the goal, especially since this doctor’s office didn’t exactly keep normal hours.
I was grateful there was nothing else distracting the doctors from taking care of Mr. Simoni. At least I knew there’d be no missteps or accidents due to a rushed atmosphere.
Liz was still in my arms, sobbing more vigorously than I would have expected. I was surprised she still had so many tears. She was no longer thrashing around but her cries could be heard, I was certain, everywhere throughout the hospital.
Finally, one of the nurses walked gingerly over to us. I smiled at her, but Liz didn’t seem to register her until she spoke.
"Would you like some water?" she asked Liz.
