Liz was crying more hysterically and losing it. I couldn’t blame her, but it wasn't going to help the situation. I started to agree, now, with Michael that perhaps I should have stayed behind with her.

I thought about what kind of condition her dad might be in. I didn’t want her to see him like that, but I knew she wouldn’t have stayed behind. That would have been even worse for her, and I could only imagine how wild her imagination would have gone. If she was this bad in the car, she would have driven herself mad at home, even with me to comfort her.

Liz was frantically calling and texting her dad with no response. The longer he was silent the more panicked she became. We had all now memorized his answering machine. She was starting to get more angry and frustrated as well as panicked. I worried for a moment she might break her phone. Of course, all things considered, that wouldn’t be the worst thing. When this was all over, getting a new phone would be the easiest fix.
