As Phil laughed maniacally, the only thing I could think of was Isabella and the other kids at my daycare. That’s all he could have meant when talking about ‘the kids’. My heart sank and I looked knowingly at Michael. His eyes went wide. It seemed that everyone came to the same realization at the same time.
Michael was next to me in an instant and took my hand in his.
"We have to get to the daycare," he said.
I nodded. I reached into his pocket and took the keys. He stared at me as I moved to open the driver's side.
"It’s better this way," I urged. I thought of Isabella as my daughter, I loved her like my own but it was still better that I was driving. It’d still have a clearer head than Michael.
He only nodded and got in the car. He knew better than to argue when time was so pressing.
"Who’s there right now?" Michael demanded.
I glanced at the clock. It was half past two in the morning. They would have switched shifts by now.
