Chapter 29: Penn Tells the Truth

“The first thing I need you to do is go home and I’ll be providing the ride.”

“Why? I can take the bus.”

Penn grimaced. “You’re supposed to trust me.”

“Paige has some reservations and she’s the most trusting person I know.”

He rubbed a hand down his face. Independent women were always the hardest to interview. He respected them but wished they could dial it back just a little. They made his job difficult and this wasn’t even his job anymore. “You promised to trust me.”

A sigh came through the phone. “Okay. How will I know this is the right person?”

At least she was a little suspicious. Maybe she would take what he was going to tell her seriously. “Can you get out of work?”

“Yes. I can go home sick or something. I’m almost done anyway.”

“Good. Thank you for your cooperation, Brooke. I promise I’ll tell you everything tonight.”

“Okay.”

I gave her the name of the bodyguard and his description. “He’ll look scary, but he isn’t. I promise he is there to protect you.”
