Brenda nodded. “Please hear me out.”


Brooke didn’t know what to do. She felt trapped by this woman even though she hadn’t been threatening. If she screamed, everyone would come running. Was she overreacting? Was Brenda unstable? 


Brooke’s gaze darted around for an escape. Everyone was talking and not paying attention to them. Finally, she came to a decision. She would listen to what Brenda had to say. 


Crossing her arms, Brooke said, “Go ahead.”


Brenda leaned in closer, her perfume tickling Brooke's nose.“Penn is a good guy. I know he’s serious and brooding, but he is really a solid man.”


Why did Brenda feel the need to say these things? Brooke was questioning everything about Penn, now. What Brenda had to say wasn’t helping. “Why are you telling me this?”


Brenda put a hand on her arm and Brooke did her best not to shrug it off. The party would be awkward if she did. She searched for ways to get out of this situation, but she didn’t see any.
