"Human? My mate is human?" Veron asked aloud, unable to believe what he just discovered.
"Hahaha..." He laughed in ridicule, looking incredulously at the person who just stepped out of the office. She didn't even notice him or pay him any attention.
Her focus was still on the office she just stepped out of. She had her back resting on the wall opposite the office, tapping her foot lightly on the floor and looking inside the office as if she was waiting for somebody. Even when he laughed, she didn't turn to look at him.
"Are you kidding me, Selene?" Veron asked, annoyance washing over him at this unexpected discovery.
"Haa!" Another laugh erupted from his lips, as he raked his eyes over the figure standing a few feets away from him. Apart from her scent, there was nothing pleasing about her appearance.
Her brown hair was tied in a low ponytail, and she was dressed in a grey oversized t-shirt and blue baggy pants. On her feet were a pair of black sneakers, and her face... Wait! He didn't know what her face looked like since he could only see her side profile.
Judging from her side profile, he would say she was prettier than the average woman, but does that even matter? Do any of these things he just noticed matter? At the end of the day, she was still a weak and fickle human.
"Isn't it enough that I'm different, cursed, and hated? Why add such a joke to the list of my problems? Eh, Selene?" He muttered and shut his eyes. When he opened them again, they burned with determination and malice as he turned around and started walking away.
"Wha-what do you think you are doing" Gerrard growled, surprised that instead of approaching his mate, Veron was going the other way. He had been too excited to find his mate that he didn't pay attention to Veron's grumblings.
He had also been initially surprised that his mate was human, but it didn't last long. Before he knew it, his excitement overshadowed his shock as her addicting scent filled his lungs. Who cares if she's human? She was his, and his alone.
"Leaving, of course," Veron answered, rolling his eyes, as his actions were obvious.
A threatening growl from Gerrard made his steps falter and a frown dominated his face.
"What is it?" Veron asked, wondering what got Gerrard in a foul mood.
"One more step, Veron, and I'll do something that we'll both regret for the rest of our lives," Gerrard warned, and this time, Veron stopped walking.
At this time, Skye already located him and came to stand before him. He had a confused look on his face, seeing Veron alone instead of in the company of his mate. Did she reject him? He doubted it because it was barely one minute since Veron walked away from the reception. No rejection can happen that fast.
So what was the problem? Or was it a false alarm? Skye wanted to ask, but he held his tongue, noticing that Veron seemed to be in a conversation with Gerrard.
"What's your problem?" Veron asked, sensing Gerrard's irritation, but not knowing why his wolf was angry.
"What's my problem? Haa... Did you just ask me that?" Gerrard asked in an unbelieving tone.
"Yes. Why are you threatening me?"
"We just found our mate and you are... Leaving?" Gerrard's annoyed voice rang out. "Leaving to where exactly? To get her flowers?"
"Did you just say, mate?" Veron scoffed. "She's human, Gerrard." He reminded, speaking out loud this time.
"And so fucking what? Huh? What if she's human? She is still our mate." Gerrard stated.
"Maybe she is yours, but she's definitely not mine." Veron decided, resuming his walk.
He halted again after taking three steps, grinding his teeth in anger when he heard his bones cracking as Gerrard started to take over.
"Veron?" Skye called out in alarm, his eyes widened as he sent a quick glance around to ensure no other person was witnessing what was happening.
Veron was bent over, his facial structure contorted and red fur was already sprouting on the exposed part of his hand, neck, and face.
Skye moved to stand in front of Veron, blocking him from the view of anyone who decided to pass through that place.
"Stop it, Gerrard! What are you doing?" Veron groaned, trying to force Gerrard back to no avail.
"I warned you not to take one more step, but you are too stubborn," Gerrard replied, pausing the transition halfway.
"Argh... Stop it! You can't force me to accept her." He groaned, complaining through gritted teeth. All his efforts to fight Gerrard proved abortive as his weakness had not subsided.
Even when he wasn't weak, it was always a difficult task controlling his wolf, so they chose to understand each other, instead of fighting for control.
But right now, there was no way he would let Gerrard bully him into accepting that human. That will not work.
"Same way you can't force me to reject her. There's no way I'm letting you stay away from her."
"You do realize you will ruin any little chance you have with her if she sees your true nature?" Veron asked, still grinding his teeth because of the uncomfortable position Gerrard left him in.
"Nice try. But I'm not buying it. You will lose more if I do what I am about to do. Your reputation is at stake, remember?"
"What do you want me to do? I can't accept a human mate." Veron insisted in a defeated tone.
"Why not?" Gerrard queried.
"What do you mean why not? How can you expect me to accept a weak human as my mate when there are so many powerful people after me? What happens if they target her? Apart from that, did you think she will accept me like that? Have you forgotten what I am? Have you forgotten all the complexities surrounding my life? I'd rather not accept her than get rejected by a mere human."
Silence fell in Veron's head after his last statement. Gerrard said nothing, but also didn't release him.
"I understand your predicament, Veron. But I also can't let her go. So we have to settle on a middle ground. I have a suggestion that will favor both of us." Gerrard said, breaking the silence.
"And what's that?" Veron asked, narrowing his eyes as he suspected Gerrard's suggestion was going to be a ridiculous one.
"Start school all over again."
"..."
"WHAT?"
