Chapter62

What David had done with another woman was neither known to me nor was it of interest to me. It didn't matter whether it was real and it was only a one-time error as he stated. I had exhausted every option in an effort to keep him close. I've just handed him the keys to the kingdom. Even though I was his girlfriend at the time, I was never his first choice.

As I sat in my gloomy bedroom, I couldn't help but feel completely useless.

“Jessica.”

Hearing Carl's booming voice startle me out of my thoughts. I looked at him intently as he stood before me, and my stomach dropped. He had deeper creases in the area surrounding his eyes. He ruffled his wild hair with one hand and avoided looking me in the eye.

The inevitable had been foretold, yet I resisted the inevitable all the same. To avoid making physical contact with him, I pulled myself to my feet and crossed my arms over my chest. No matter how hard I tried to let go of him if I grabbed him, I couldn't do it.
