Twenty-one

After dinner, all I wanted to do was go back up to my phone and chat with Uche and that was what I did but he wasn't online when I came back. I checked his room through my window and his lights were turned off. He was probably having dinner too at his house so I decided to wait while lying in bed till he came back online.

...

The next morning I woke up and my phone was on my face, I had fallen asleep while wa.iting for him to come online. I quickly unlocked my phone and I found out that I didn't go out of the app so it showed that I was online the whole night while I was sleeping.

I saw Uche's messages, our chat was open when I fell asleep, he must have thought I was ignoring his messages on purpose because it all read as SEEN.

'Hey.'– 8:46pm.

'Sorry, I didn't come online earlier.'–9:08pm.

'Are u mad?'–9:09pm.

'I'm really sorry, don't be mad.' –9:12pm.

'Julie.' –9:30pm.

'....'–9:51pm.

I sighed and slapped my forehead while reading his messages, he must have thought I was ignoring him all that time. I wonder how he felt texting me without getting any reply even after the messages counted as received and read.

'Hey' I texted back though he was offline. I went to the window to check if I would see him but I didn't see him there, not even his legs at the part of the bed I usually saw them.

'Sorry, I fell asleep when I was online and....' I wanted to text him that, with an explanation of what happened but erased it. He probably won't reply me, he might be thinking I was wanting to play with him.

I went off the chat app, annoyed and sad at the same time but before that I saw a hi text from a new number that made me more annoyed.

I laid back in bed, thinking about him. Was this it? The one guy I for once like, finally asks me out and I messed it up. I stretched my hands, lazily and moodily, I reached for one of the mint candy I left at my lamp table.

....

I woke up when I heard loud laughing downstairs. I had earlier gone downstairs for breakfast and helped out with chores around and after showering I went back to sleep when I checked and Uche was still not online. Yup, I'm a big time sleeper.

I would have gone back to sleep after hearing the laughter but I was sure I heard Uche, it was what made me sit up. Still sleepy, I forced myself off the bed and went to see for myself.

Peeking from the top of the stairs, I saw that it really was him, he was watching something with Nick on his laptop at the dinning table.

"Wait, let me get it." Nick said and started coming up the stairs, he paused when he got to where I was standing, after giving me a weird look, he went into his room and shut the door.

I quickly went down the stairs, not minding how how my hair was. Uche looked up when he heard the noise I made going down the stairs.

"Heyy." Was all I said, hoping I didn't sound stupid, I didn't know how relationships worked, I've never been in one so I didn't know what to do but stand there awkwardly.

"Julie." He smiled; that smile of his, and the way he called my name."I actually came to know if you were alright but Nick said you were sleeping." He came to me.

"Yeah, I just had a little nap." I said and he chuckled."What?" I had to ask why he was chuckling like that.

"A little nap? I've been here twice." He responded and I looked away, he was right, it wasn't just a little nap like I said it was.

"Okayyyy, maybe it wasn't a little nap." I said laughing.

"No, it wasn't," he joined me in laughing,"your hair." He added, making me touch my hair, it couldn't be that bad.

"I've been sleeping pretty much all day." I confessed as a reason for my hair been the way it was. He came closer to me and his hands started to caress my hair.

"It's not that bad," He said still stroking my hair backwards."Now it looks better." He smiled again, directly in front of me and I didn't know what to do, even if I don't feel nervous like before when he was this close to me.

"Yesterday," I remembered that I hadn't explained why I didn't reply his text but he seemed not to be bothered about it because he didn't bring it up."I'm sorry I didn't reply all of your texts, I...."

"Network issue?" he asked, is that what he thought happened?

"No," I shook my head,"I fell asleep."

"You fell asleep?"

"Yeah, this might sound unreal but I actually fell asleep on the phone, like I woke up this morning with my phone's screen stuck to my face and I wanted to text back but I didn't even know how to start explaining all of that over a text." I explained.

"You could have just called." He laughed.

"No, I hate to make phonecalls," I replied immediately, something that was true,"but now you've said it, you are right, I should have just called, I can't believe I didn't think of that."

"Yeah, you hate phonecalls, the same reason I didn't think it was right or even bother to call you last night but I'm glad I didn't, I would have woken you up if I did."

"You are not mad or anything?" I asked him even if the answer to that question was obvious because he was smiling right now and I felt like kissing those lips of his.
