15. What do I do now?

HUGO'S POV

At this moment I must admit I was confused as hell by Alexandra's way of acting. I was glad I ran into her at the bar, but everything she said doesn't make sense, right? No, of course not, it can't be true, because I'm sure if it were true, all these years at my job would be for nothing.

I don't know where she was taking me, but I was following her anyway, I wanted to see what it was she wanted to show me, but from her face, I can almost assure she was convinced I would leave later. I was so deep in my thoughts I didn't realize we were standing at the door of a house; I suppose hers.

"Are you ready to know the truth?" she said turning around "I'm not so sure about that." At this point I was more confused to understand what was really going on. A small smile appeared on his face, but something like sadness, which made me frown. "Well, now you'll see what I'm talking about."

We entered the house, headed upstairs and went into one of the rooms, an office to be more exact. He waited for me to come in and locked the door, which made me a little alert.

"Don't worry, I'm not going to do anything to you, it's to prevent my sister and Diego from come in." She said turning to the desk "Why would they want to come in?" I asked following her and sitting on one of the chairs "You only enter this office either to do business or to discuss things about merchandise."

"Merchandise of what?" She started taking papers from everywhere and passing them to me. She ended up sitting in the opposite chair and all I did was look at her without understanding anything.

"If you want to understand what is happening and what I was referring to in the bar, look at those papers. I am sure they will clarify all those doubts you have." I began to look at papers and among strategies to pass the merchandise, others were the money they earned with the merchandise, what they spent on weapons. Apparently, she wasn't lying when she said she ran a mafia, and I didn't like it too much.

"Like I told you, you can't talk before you know the truth." She said making me look up from the papers to focus on her "Why are you showing me this?" I asked more confused than ever "Because you deserve to know the truth, and because you should love your job."

"Right now, I'm hating it." I said leaning back in my chair "Don't say that. Like I told you, I'm not the best person you can have by your side."

All this was too much for me, the person I felt something for was involved in the mafias. It's just fate must be against me or something. I started pacing around trying to find an answer to this, but I just couldn't see it.

"You may be wondering how I got into this business, but for what it's worth, I've been in this business for a couple of weeks." She said "Why?" I stopped, waiting for the answer "To achieve a goal."

"I'm sure you can get it another way, not this Alexandra. I wouldn't want to have to choose between my job or you." A smile appeared on her face, as she denied "You don't have to choose. If I told you in time, it's so you can focus on your work."

This time it was my turn to deny. We may not have known each other for more than a couple of days, but I felt a connection to this girl, one I didn't even feel with Amelia. "But I can't do it." I said, "We don't know each other at all Hugo, we only spoke a couple of times."

"That doesn't matter exactly to me. What I feel for you will not go away." I sat back in the chair and rested my arms on my knees. "You can't be sure if you don't even try." He said with a frown, "I just don't want to try it either. I am sure I can help you achieve those goals if you need my help."

"The thing is, I don't need it, because that would only get you into more trouble." I straightened up trying to find the reason why she was in this world "Why do you do it?"

"Do you remember the part about me killing people?" she asked wryly "This can't be happening to me. I should be arresting you for everything you're doing." I said, "And you can do it, nobody is going to stop you."

"Why are you doing all this Alexandra?" I asked, focusing my gaze on her "There are many things you don't know about me, Hugo." Her tone had turned a bit darker than what I was used to hear "I'm willing to listen to them. There must be something that makes you act this way."

"Do you really want to know?" she asked surprised, and I nodded "I would like to understand why you ended up in this business." I said "Because we inherited it. My father died a couple of weeks ago as you know."

"I know" that was something I knew; I was increasingly lost "But what you don't know is he was the biggest Italian drug trafficker around." My eyebrows almost met my scalp, because the biggest drug dealer in Italy was Titano, and his son had died years ago. "That can't be, he only had one son who died."

"We are not really his daughters. He and his wife adopted us in when my sister and I ran away from the club." She said crossing her arms, it seemed like she was trying to stay together, which confused me even more "What club are you talking about?" I asked for.

"To begin with, I'm not Italian... I was kidnapped at the age of seven in a park and I spent twelve years locked up in that place with Megan..." this seemed to be something she didn't talk about and something that was hard for her to talk about "Where are you from then?" I asked, "United States, more precisely, Los Angeles," she said with a shrug. "How did you end up in Italy?"

"After twelve years, Megan and I managed to escape from that club. Everyone looked at us strangely, with disgust, but all changed when we met Analissa. She was the one who brought us here, and we've been here ever since." A small smile appeared on his face. "And how long have you been here?"

"Six years." He said, "Who kidnapped you?" I asked full of curiosity "Another of the mafias you're after." I frowned, because we were after many mafias "Which one?"

"The Russian, and that's why I have to keep the mafia. We must take revenge for what those fools did to us. They didn't just kidnap us… They tortured us… They killed us if we didn't do what they wanted… They sold us to other men… They killed my child…" she said, her voice cracking "The girl…?" I asked without being able to finish saying it, as far as I knew, all her family were fine, the only one who had died was her father.

"No, luckily, I managed to escape before it happened." She said, "We'll catch them and put them in jail." I tried to convince her, in the end we still had no proof they were behind the Italian mafia, I'm sure it would continue like this.

"But we don't want them to end in jail, that's the problem. They have to end dead." She said seriously "I don't think it's the best Alexandra." I tried to reason with her, "It may not be the best, but I'm not going to let them get close to my daughter. They threatened to kill her… you understand."

I heard the desperation in her voice, loud and clear. I could also see how she was holding back tears, which I'm pretty sure I wouldn't see fall. "We can put protection to all of you." I said and she denied "And that protection would end dead. I don't want to carry more deaths on my shoulders than I already have."

"Do you regret having murdered?" I asked, "No, the people I killed deserved it, and I had to if I didn't want to leave evidence." I frowned and kept thinking, what did she mean by leaving no evidence? "We have a murderer who leaves no evidence." I said more to myself than to her, and a sad smile appeared on her face. "I know, I do all in my power not to leave any."

Wait, was she the killer we've been looking for all this time? This couldn't be true. I understand why the mafia, really. I had to face that myself as a child and my father ended up in jail because of me. I understood the reasons why she was doing it. She just wanted to defend her daughter, but I think there are other ways to get everything she wants.

"I knew this would happen." She said and I focused my gaze on her again "What exactly?" I asked without understanding what she meant "Right now you hate me for what I do." She said and I denied, because I don't "I don't hate you, I understand why you do it. And it may be what I'm going to say ends up destroying my career, but I don't care. I want to help you."

"What?" the surprise was evident in her voice; I could even tell she moved off the back of her chair an inch. "You heard it. I want to help you, Alexandra." I said, and I don't think I've ever said something so serious in my life. "Why do you would do it?"

"Because I love you, and I want to try to at least help find a way you don't have to use the mob." Alexandra denied again with a small smile on her face, but that smile didn't reach her eyes "I will never get rid of the mafia, Hugo" she said seriously "Why? I asked.

"For starters, it's going to help me and my sister take down the Russians and I like the protection I have right now, that's from the mafia. If I get rid of it, I'll never find out in time when we're in danger and I won't have the same protection I have now. Finally, I know I can help a lot of people with the money from the mafia. I can help girls like my sister and me to overcome their traumas... to save them from whatever hell they are living through... I don't want anyone to have to go through the same thing as my sister, I and the girls who were with us... I can make Italy a better country …"

I could see that was something excite her, and I know she's right, she could have all the protection she wanted if she keep the mob, and when she said she wanted to help girls who were in her situation, I know she was serious, which made me not dislike the idea so much, but I also know she would destroy the lives of many other people with all the drugs she brought into the country.

"It's a good idea, I'm not denying it, but you'll also destroy the lives of many other people" she agreed and laced her fingers "But they have options and they do it because they want to... they buy those girls from families don't have money or for other reasons … I know there will be collateral damage like the families… but I could help those families too" he said and seeing it that way I also know it was true.

"It's a great plan," she nodded, and for once since we walked into her office, I could see she was excited about something. "So, you're going to keep the mob?" Alexandra nodded with a small smile on her face. "About the Russians, is it true?" Alexandra frowned and stared at me waiting for me to finish the question "Both you and your sister want to kill them"

"Yes" I stared at her, she looked beautiful with the moonlight reflecting on her face "I want to help you, Alexandra" again, surprise was evident on her face which made a smile appear on my face. "Hugo, it's I appreciate your offer, but I wouldn't want you to lose your job because of me."

I denied, because that may happen at some point. What's more, the DEA was also involved in mafia shit, and not exactly the good ones, what Alexandra wanted to do was better than any other mafia in the world "I'll find another one, if necessary, but I just want to help you."

"Hugo, I'm a criminal. It goes against your job." She said seriously "And since I told you, I don't care. Don't you understand I love you?" I asked half frustrated "It's not I don't understand you..."

"So, what is it?" I asked without giving her time to finish whatever she was going to say "I just don't trust men. In general, I find it hard to trust everyone, but more so with men." He said practically in a whisper, "And what can I do to earn your trust?" He shrugged and we were silent for a few minutes.

"Alexandra, it might be you don't see yourself trusting a man, I understand because of what they did to you in that club, but I wouldn't hurt you for nothing in the world... I know we don't know each other at all, but I'm serious when you I say I would like to have something with you" I said "Hugo, it isn't as easy as you think it's to change it" she said.

"I'm not asking you to change that, I don't want you to change, and I don't want us to be something like that all of a sudden... I'm just asking you to give me a chance... to let me get to know you and to get to know me... it can take years and I won't care... just know I want to be with you" I said, sitting on the edge of the chair.

"I don't know if one day I'll be able to be with someone like that…" she whispers "If you're not capable, I'd understand, we'd be friends… You shouldn't force yourself into anything you don't want, Alexandra…. I don't want you to force yourself into something you don't want..."

She stared at me for a few minutes, she seemed deep in her thoughts, and I wasn't going to be the one to interrupt her. I didn't know what those sons of bitches had done to her, but I know it couldn't be good, and now I could understand the reason why they always had bodyguards, apparently the Titano wasn't as bad as he seemed.

"I think you should go, it's late and you'll have to go to work" she said looking at me "Will I ever get to see you?" I asked, because I didn't want to lose her "We'll probably end up meeting at the usual bar." She said with a shrug, "I hope that's soon." I said hopefully. At least I hope she doesn't leave Italy "We'll see about that."

"In case it matters to you, I will go every day. At least I hope to see you sometime. Could I have your number in case you decide to leave without telling me? I asked, "I'm not leaving without making things right, but I can't give you, my number. Who assures me you aren't going to follow me with the GPS of the mobile?

"I won't do it." I quickly said, "I can't take that risk." She said crossing her arms again "Okay, what if I give you mine?" I asked, "I don't know."

"I can't follow you, and you can only call me you." She thought for a few minutes looking at the wall behind me "Okay, but no cheating." I denied and she gave me her cell phone and put my number in it. I just hope she doesn't leave, I'm not too sure she would get over it. I still don't quite understand how she got me to fall in love with her so quickly, and even though I didn't exactly say it to her in those words, I hope she knows.

"Well, I think you better go before Megan and the others wake up. I don't think you want to face any of them." She said getting up from her chair "Your sister is scary, so I can't imagine how scary she's when she wakes up."

"It will sound strange, but she wakes up in a good mood." She said with a small smile, "Now that's kind of weird." She nodded. "Trust me, if she's in a bad mood with all the sleeping, then we'd be in trouble."

"You should go rest. It's already five in the morning Alexandra" I said "I'd would love to." I got up from the chair and stared at her without understanding what she meant "Do you have something to do?" I asked out of curiosity "I have to do a couple of things, nothing illegal if that's what you're worried about."

"I'm not so concerned you do something illegal as something might happen to you." She smiled and leaned against the table. "Are you always like this?" She asked, "Like what?" Now I was really confused "I don't know how to say it... Do you care about everyone like that?" and I denied, because I didn't do it with everyone, only with the people who really mattered to me, and this girl really mattered to me.

"Because with me?" she asked, her voice full of curiosity. "Because like I told you, I love you, and I wouldn't want anything to happen to you."

"Don't worry, I'll be fine. Now go before someone thinks you've been kidnapped or something." She said humorously, which made me smile bigger than I had, "I get the feeling you're too pessimistic."

"I'm not. In the world I'm involved in, it's rare they don't kidnap someone who works in the police, or people from other mafias..." I agreed, because she was right about this. "Would you do me a favour?" I asked for.

"It depends on what the favour is about." She said, "Well, there really are quite a few." She rolled her eyes and crossed her arms. "You ask too much." The smile had not left her face yet, so she supposed she hadn't crossed any limits.

"Maybe, but can you make them for me?" I asked again "As I told you, that depends on what you ask me for."

"Just think about I can help you and take care of yourself, if you need anything you just have to call me." She shock her head and focused her gaze on mine. She had the most beautiful blue eyes I had ever seen "Don't worry, I'll be fine."

Alexandra came out from behind the desk, and we started walking towards the office door. We went in silence until we reached the door of the house. I kept looking at her for a couple of seconds, and I can almost assure I saw her blush. "See you at the bar?" I asked.

"I don't know, but I'll try to go more often." She said with a small smile. I couldn't stop my smile from growing until it barely caught me in the face, and I could see a small smile on her face, which made me happier than I would normally be at this time of the morning.

"Then we'll see each other." I said, "Bye Hugo." She said, "Rest and take care please." I asked for the last time "I say the same."

"Bye Alexandra." She waved goodbye and as soon as I was at the main gate and I got out, she went into the house. Tonight, I had discovered many things about Alexandra and about cases I had been looking for for a long time, but I was worried about what could happen to her and a little less importantly, my work. Everything I had found out about her today was reason to arrest her and send her to jail, but I couldn't do that, I couldn't send her there after she trusted me. What am I supposed to do now?
