Everything is in slow motion.
I have a brief flash of clarity when Alec turns his head and looks at me, a smile on his face and eyes watery with unshed tears. He looks content, somehow, like he’s finally made the right decision and, if he dies here, can die happily.
But as quick as that moment came and went, everything is moving again, wolves snarling and Victor’s laughter ringing through my ears like the blood racing there. It’s unfair, but like I realized a long time ago, nothing in Alec’s life seems to be fair, and this moment in time is no exception.
