Same old Fox

"Hey Mister, please drop me here." I suddenly thought of Fox when the cab passed by Maxine's club. The last time I remembered, he worked there as a waiter even after getting at crossroads with Maxine. She chose to forgive the latter but I don't exactly know why she did that because she had chased him away in the first place. When I was still recovering, Fox had mentioned that Maxine wanted him back not as a boyfriend but to continue working for her. Back then I didn't think much of the aftermath of their affair but now, I had this hunch that she had played me for a fool. She was still very much into Fox and that's what I wanted to find out.

I lied to Mabel about not liking Fox damn, I wanted to see him after such a long time. But how? I couldn't just walk in like I wanted to have a drink or so, I needed to hatch a plan ASAP. If I went there alone, maybe I'd bump into Maxine and she'd think that I was still after Fox.

I spotted a tall guy leaning against his Bugatti Veyron while smoking. I took a few steps and I was now standing in front of him. He was handsome with a rough stubble, not bad at all.

"I have no more cigarettes so fuck off!" He coughed while inhaling the smoke making him look much older. Maybe he was in his late twenties.

"I'm not here for your cigarettes rather after you." I blubbered without thinking.

"What do you take me for?" He chuckled.

"Can you be my fake boyfriend for thirty minutes or so, I need to annoy someone in there." I sounded like a creep.

"Where's the money. Nothing is for free b*itch." He snorted.

"Of course. Here, that'll be enough I guess." I went into my purse and removed a few notes and handed it to him hoping he won't make a fuss about it. I saw him move and thought he was trying to get away.

"Hey! Come back here!" I went after him and he let out a cold laughter.

"You're not from around here huh? Let's give it a shot." He smiled wryly at me as we walked side by side to the club. There was so much buzzing, loud music and people smoking and drinking like death itself.

"Let's sit there." I blurted out when his eyes roamed everywhere.

Sitting at the middle was a good idea because it was a good view for everyone to see us. I ordered a bottle of champagne as I scanned around the place perhaps searching for Fox. I was disappointed that after a little chat with the stranger, he still didn't show up.

"So where's your boyfriend?"

"Huh?"

"The one I'm replacing."

"Ohh! It seems he's not around today. He works here but.... nevermind. I think we should leave." I was already more than disappointed and I couldn't wait any longer.

I stood up to leave but the man kept clinging on the champagne left on the bottle.

"You can finish up on the way. I paid for it, so don't worry even a bit." I tried hard to he polite because at that moment I had lost it. I just wanted to go back home.

"C'mon, I'll buy another one, my treat. Let's beat into it. I want to know how much of an alcoholic you are." He winked at me and I shunned him.

"I'm in no mood for drinking, I have to get home." I rejected his offer.

"I had taken a few steps to the door and the next thing I know, I was being pushed to the wall, a familiar scent lingered in the air and it was him, Fox. Did he by any chance see me hovering around that man? We were so close, so tense and only our shallow breaths were heard. The urge to kiss his hot lips was high, they were dangerously close to mine and at that moment nothing mattered. However, my fantasies didn't live for that long because he pulled away. He was now pocketing his hands peering at me intently.

"Good to see you but if I may ask, is that your boyfriend over there. I didn't know that you now hang out with drug traffickers." He chuckled.

"Are you jealous?" I said without reasoning.

"Why would I be? I thought you knew your boyfriend, I mean, everyone knows he's a criminal on the run from the law. Where did the two of you meet anyway?" He was so calm about it making me feel dumb. He had moved on and I was the one trying to revive the moment we once shared.

"He's not my boyfriend, I just met him outside, he helped me so I thought of buying him wine, that's the least thing I could do." I got over my fantasies and spoke like seeing him for the first time. Casually.

"Well, good luck with everything. Duty calls." He smiled fondly and left. Watching him walk away, I noticed someone else looking my way. It was Maxine, she had called him and then gave him a kiss to mark her territory.

"It's all over." I mumbled to myself and walked out. Fox wasn't worth it after all, it was I who reluctantly denied my heart the happiness it deserved. I should have given those guys in campus, a chance to explore my assets.
