I got used to death before, after my grandmother, my uncle Peter, and a few of my parents' high school friends. I thought I'd be able to get used to it out here too, but I guess things are different when you're the one causing the death and when you have no one to help you get over it.

I wish I could do things right. For myself, for the people around me, the people I love. It never works out that way though. I do stupid shit and it has consequences, I know it does but I keep doing it. It's like my body will do anything to survive but my mind wants the exact opposite. 

This is not a story about love. It is not a story about heartbreak but my life revolves around that. After what I did to him it's all it can revolve around. I deserve death. He deserved to take me with him, but he didn't. Unfortunately I'm still here.

Chapter 12: i would have given you the world

Maverick ran into the house first, with Cole following close behind. He kept screaming his sister's name, but he never got a reply.

"You said you would help me find her."

"Yeah, but, Mav, I don't... I don't think she's here."

Maverick broke through all the doors, looking in every corner. He started to believe that maybe it was really hopeless, that his sister was really gone, until he broke through the lock on the guest bedroom door. The room was lit with candles, and a warm breeze came through the open window. His mother stood in the corner of the room, facing the wall, crying. His sister sat on the floor at the foot of the bed, her hands tied to the bedpost. She was here, but she wasn't alive. She was one of those things now.

"Maverick-" Cole rested his hand on his friend's shoulder.

"What the hell did you do, Mom? What did you do to her!" His best friend held his body back to restrain him from doing something he might regret. His mother didn't respond; her body shook as her tears fell harder.

Cole buried Annie's body in the backyard, where they used to have barbecues and play soccer. He felt like he had lost his sister too, but he stayed strong for Maverick and only cried when he wasn't looking. The two never spoke about what happened to the rest of the group, except when Valentine was passed out and Maverick pulled his skin from his body in an attempt to save his life. He told him everything about his little sister, knowing he wasn't listening to a word he said.
