Mages are a profession respected worldwide, they are known as game-changers in every field. In war, they are feared for the destruction they bring to the battlefield, while in daily life, their magic is used creatively. Water mages are tasked with watering vast farmlands and ensuring a steady supply of water in every region.
Fire mages mostly serve by burning garbage in the city or sometimes helping to reclaim land from forests, turning it into farmland.
Wind mages became sailors aiding the speed of each shipment of products contributing greatly to the economy, while Earth mages became architectural experts, speeding up infrastructure projects in the city.
Because of their versatility, mages have become the most important profession in the world. In this world, mages shape society and drive civilization forward. If you were born with the ability to wield magic, your future was secure.
Blue Rose City.
Battlefield.
On top of the city wall, where most mages on the battlefield gather.
"From the heart of the raging sun, I call upon the ancient flame. Burning bright, as dawn meets dusk, let all that stands in shadow be consumed by your eternal fire, Infernal Lumen," shouted a young mage, pouring almost all his mana into that single spell.
A blazing inferno erupted in the distance, burning everything in a 10-meter radius and leaving a first-degree burn on a level 5 Ambist in the distance, which instantly regenerated.
Seeing this, the young mage dejectedly stepped aside, letting someone else take his place.
With low spirits, the young mage sat on a wooden box, recovering his mana with a bottle of mana potion.
This boy was Mike, a mage apprentice from a distant kingdom, one of the many sent here to help this city along with his master.
While Mike focused on recovering, a voice suddenly spoke.
"Are you okay, Mike?" asked the voice.
Mike turned to see his friend Emily.
Emily was a girl from the same hometown as Mike, she is a high-level mage.
"I'm fine, thank you for asking, Emily."
Emily sighed and said, "Mike, keep working hard. You'll eventually reach my level, so don't be down all the time."
"Hahaha, am I that easy to read?" Mike asked.
Emily smiled and replied, "We grew up together. I know everything about you even your hidden collection under your bed."
Mike's face showed panic. "How did you know that? No how did you even find out in the first place?"
Emily ignored Mike's panic and teased, "Long-haired blonde girl, huh? I'm blonde too. Do I fall into that category? Why didn't you make a move on me then?"
Mike's face turned red with embarrassment. "Stop, Emily. This isn't the right place for your jokes."
Hearing this, Emily's eyes showed sadness, but she quickly hid it. Of course, Mike was oblivious to the change.
"By the way, where did Sir Griffet go? Did you see him?" Emily asked.
"No, I don't know where he is," Mike started, but a deep voice interrupted before he could finish.
"I am here," said an old man.
"Master!" Mike exclaimed.
"You're finally here! Arch-Mage Kito is looking for you, he needs your help with something," Emily said.
The old man scratched his long beard and thought briefly before speaking. "Okay, I'll go right away. But before that, Emily, can you protect my disciple for me? And Mike, take this opportunity to gain experience. This is the first step to reaching my level."
Mike replied dejectedly, "Master, you're a level 8 mage, and I'm only a level 2. I've been stuck at this level for 5 years."
"I've already told you to call me Teacher Griffet. Also, negativity will only hinder your progress, so stop showing that kind of expression," the old man, known as Griffet, said to Mike with an encouraging smile.
Mike nodded in understanding, but his face still showed doubt.
Seeing this, Griffet sighed inwardly. He could see his student's potential, but certain circumstances and a lack of confidence had stagnated his progress.
Griffet continued to remind and teach his students before leaving to meet the Arch Mage.
Mike sat down again and focused on recovering his depleted mana. Emily followed suit, sitting right beside him. But before she could sit, a commotion suddenly erupted, followed by an explosion at the distant wall.
"What's happening?" Mike shouted, standing up in a panic.
Emily also stood up, activating her search magic to gather information on what was going on.
With her magic search, her perception expanded to a 5-kilometer radius, giving her a 360-degree view. Within this radius, she could see everything like a radar.
Her face tightened when she saw the situation.
"Mike, get ready," Emily said.
Mike's face became solemn, but his hands were shaking. He didn't know what was happening, but he felt his luck was running out.
"Emily, what's going on?" Mike asked.
"We are under attack," Emily replied.
"Attack?! Didn't the Arch Mage say we were safe here?" Mike asked nervously.
"The Arch Mage did say that, but he didn't tell us that we are completely safe here," Emily said.
"Who's attacking us then?" Mike asked.
Emily didn't respond. Her perception showed her the whole situation in that commotion.
She saw hundreds of Ambists that looked like Lizardmen climbing the wall and attacking the mage formation with their breath attacks.
Lizardman Ambists looked like a monster known as Lizardman with the only difference being their tails, Lizardman had tails, while Lizardman Ambists did not.
The Lizardman Ambists climbed the wall with their sharp claws. They performed a great push and successfully invaded the large rampart where the Mages' Formation was located.
They started causing chaos, killing the mages on the rampart.
The mages resisted, throwing spells at the Lizardman Ambists trying to kill them, but it didn't work.
"Idiots! Lizardman Ambists with that color are resistant to magic! Retreat and let the warriors handle them!" a random mage shouted. The knights nearby stepped in between the Lizardman Ambists and the mages.
In the blink of an eye, a chaotic clash erupted.
The knights confronted the Lizardman Ambists head-on, charging forward and unleashing a torrent of slashes. The Lizardman Ambists tanked the attacks with their tough bodies and scales, receiving no injuries. The Lizardman Ambists opened their mouths and released a fiery breath that could melt metal.
The knights raised their magic-endowed shields and blocked the attack head-on. They blocked the attack easily, then roared and charged forward. The Lizardman Ambists also roared and met the knights head-on.
Emily deactivated her magic.
"Lizardman Ambists," Emily responded to Mike's question.
Mike's feet went cold, he visibly showed fear.
Emily slapped Mike on the back, laughing, and said, "Don't be like that. Smile a little, this is a great chance for you to level up."
Mike only managed a defeated smile.
While the two bantered, they didn't notice the looming threat hanging over their heads. In the cover of night, thousands of Lizardman Ambists gazed at the city wall with their hungry, red-glowing eyes.
