Chapter Seventy One

CHAPTER SEVENTY ONE

“Sarah!”

His voice is tight and I barely have time to react before he grins me by my upper arms, pulling me up to my toes.

His words are a desperate growl, “Stop it! Stop blocking me!”

I stare up at his face and something inside me trembles. His pain does nothing to soothe my own internal rejection or the harsh slap of humiliation that he dealt me just hours ago.

We’ve never crossed swords like this when he’s left me with a wound I don’t know how to treat. 

“Let go of me, Lucas,” I mutter, struggling to get out of his hold.

However, his grip on me just tightens, his voice hoarse, “Put down your barriers then! Please, Sarah!”

He never pleads and his words pierce me, making something in my chest twist almost painfully so.

But lowering my shields, the very idea of allowing him access to my feelings and emotions makes me feel extremely vulnerable.
