CHAPTER NINETY TWO

“I can help,” Kayla insists, tugging on my shirt.

“I know,” I crouch down to her eye level. "But I don't want to put you in any danger situation. We’ll handle it. I just want you to be safe.”

It's not that Kayla's help would not be useful but every time her eyes close that orange color that resembles fire, she doesn't seem to be like herself. I don’t know if she’s aware of what’s happening or if she can control her powers at will. Each time, something unexpected has happened, she has been upset. I don't know whether she can become and still control her powers.

And I don't want to upset the child.

Phoenix or not, she still a little girl at the end of the day. So I ignore Damon's objections and hand Kayla her to Eric, “Keep an eye on her."


“But Sarah!” Kayla looks resistant.

“We’ve got this,” I tell her.

“I don’t want to stay here!” Kayla looks reluctant.

I ignore Damon’s insulted look.
