WISTFULNESS

"We should have taken our chances back then, when we were young and beautiful and didn't even know it."

Lois McMaster Bujold, Diplomatic Immunity.

Derek's pov.

"What is the situation right now?" I asked my beta Cullen referring to the incidence at blue moon pack.

"The bodies have been collected, their alpha Daniel made sure to stick to the script, other than that there's nothing else they know."

"Mmmhh" I hummed in response, of course I knew of the attacks I was the alpha king after all, my men and I had already examined the bodies and interrogated the injured females, I had some of my men guard the pack for a few more nights before the agents visited.

"Why would they kill 15 of their own men, I do not understand, what are they planning on doing by finishing their own and dumping them in various packs."

Cullen asked the same question that we had been asking ourselves for the past week, I was already sick with worry at this point and as much as I hated to admit it I knew we needed extra help from the other professionals, the agents, it was why I had instructed the alpha to call and inform them about the bodies, but only the ones we had found in his pack.

"It's a sick joke they are playing." I answered uninterested in the topic, I did have a hunch in what the "Zabeza" wolves were up to, I was not sure If it was them but if they were then I knew we were going to be no match for them, unless of course someone else decided to join our side and fight with us, the one person that the army of rogue wolves were after, my rejected mate.

"You know for someone whose packs are being threatened you sure look calm." Cullen commented, sounding annoyed at my lack of attention to whatever it was he was rambling about, and I let out a tired sigh.

"I am thinking." I replied calmly as I moved towards my mansions balcony, needing to have a taste of the fresh air outside, I had a pack too, it was the smallest in comparison to others and made up of chiefs, seers, elders, retired alphas and soldiers, it was made up of power and wisdom.

"What did the agents have to say?" I asked

" That they would figure this out and the alpha didn't have to worry, also they were to send some of their guards to Daniel's pack."

" good." I responded,

" But Cilia, you remember her? the alpha's wife? she mentioned something about the female agent having some abnormal capabilities, she was unusually strong for any normal she wolf, she is suspicious of her."

I let out a hearty laugh at that, my shoulders shaking with me, abnormal was just about the right word to use while describing her, i had known about her line of work a few months after she had joined the agency, I had over heard the elders talking about a new recruit, unusually hair color and also the youngest in the team, and with no past, completely wiped off from her files, the perfect candidate, she was like a ghost.

I remember how my shoulders had stiffened at the mention of her name and how the bile that rose to my throat had threatened to come out, that was how much she had hurt me, our time together had been short, and also my most painful period in existence, she had taken me through hell and back and I had still ran back to her like the spineless wolf that I used to be.

There were many things that I could forgive, and she was not one of them, she, a curse from the moon goddess to me, a wrongly answered prayer, I pitied the people in her life and those that wanted to be, I pitied her partner and everyone else close to her if she had any, because she was poison. No, she was way worse because her victims never came out alive and I considered myself lucky.

"Derek."

The sound of my beta shouting drew me out of my thoughts, and I almost jumped at a little at it,

"Yes Cullen."

I answered bored.

"Have you even been listening to me?"

he asked, sounding hurt, and I shook my head no, truthfully, I had been too absorbed in my thoughts that I had almost forgotten he was still here.

"What is it you were saying?"

"Nothing, I will have a meeting scheduled with the agency early next week, someone has got to something about this, and it looks like that person won't be you.'

I growled lowly at his disrespect, making him bow his head low and murmur a sorry before he hurriedly scurried out.

In all of my 25 years of living, I had never witnessed a pack that killed its own and used them as a message to others, I knew Adora would figure out what it was that was going on and I wanted to be there when it happened, she knew more about this than my people and I combined, and I also had to ensure that she was safe.....no...no....that was not my problem, I had more important things to worry about and she was never going to make the list.

"Alpha, there's someone here to see you." the sound of my lovely nana cut my thoughts off and I nodded in reply, returning her warm smile as I turned to follow her to the living room, which was flooded with an unfamiliar scent, I rarely received visitors, and was curious to see and hear what this one wanted.
